What this new development does about this Iran Standoff is to boost the diplomatic efforts to see if Iran blinks.

The Iranians may have been detered from their weapons program by "the implosion of the illegal nuclear smuggling network run by Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan".

Does anyone remember the fight scene in the original 1967 Star Trek episode where captain Kirk beats Khan unconsious with a nuclear "control rod".

Oh wait is this off topic?

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's foreign minister welcomed Tuesday the U.S. decision to "correct" its claim that Iran has an active nuclear weapons program, state-run radio reported.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was referring to a U.S. intelligence assessment released Monday that reversed earlier claims that Iran had restarted its weapons program in 2005 after suspending it in 2003.

"It's natural that we welcome ... countries that correct their views realistically which in the past had questions and ambiguities about (Iran's nuclear activities)," Mottaki said.

Mottaki said various reports recently issued about Iran's nuclear program, including one by the U.N. nuclear watchdog last month, showed "the current trend of Iran's nuclear activities is peaceful."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said the new report proved that past U.S. claims that Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons were false.

"Remarks by Bush and other U.S. administration officials, who have continuously talked about the danger of Iran's nuclear program, are baseless and unreliable," Hosseini said in his statement.

Several other Iranian officials also praised the new intelligence report, saying it proved Tehran's nuclear program was peaceful and had "disarmed" hawkish members of U.S. President George W. Bush's administration pushing for military action against Iran.

None of the Iranian officials admitted to having a nuclear weapons development program before 2003, as claimed by the U.S. intelligence community.

"This confession from within the U.S. administration's most sensitive ranks is proof ... that (Iran's) nuclear program is peaceful," top lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi was quoted as saying by the official news agency IRNA.

After all why shouldn't he be? If he has it or he doesn't have it, either way he has won. Diplomatically, strategically, in terms of propaganda, in terms of humiliating/discrediting our intelligence & leadership yet again, and perhaps militarily (honestly I'm not buying the validity of this latest report, at least not yet) this is a huge victory for Iran. As things now stand it will be almost impossible for the administration to sell the public on any kind of military action in Iran, barring of course any type of very provocative action taken by Iran which I highly doubt they'll try in the foreseeable future. In essence score Iran and radical Islam one, US and the West zero. What an absolute mess!

""I am familiar with the American intelligence assessment," Barak said following a meeting with Hungarian Chief of Staff Gen. Andras Havril. "Nevertheless, I say again that Iran is today a central threat on the world and the State of Israel."

Intelligence, what intelligence?

Good for Israel, I do not buy it either!

on the radio yesterday, it was being discussed that this NIE may have been political and new information may be released in the coming days. Will b closely following this story to see if this does in fact happen.

if it was political, I wish those who politicize national security (on both sides of the isle) could be tried for treason (I know they cannot under our constitution)

Now the credibility of the U.S. around the world goes down after this debacle in the intelligence department.

wouldn't surprise me in the least! It has happened before. I am so tired of our politicians playing politics. They can't see past the nose on the end of their faces. Who cares if it involves national security?? :double:

This is information from a Israeli paper: :darrow: :darrow:

The missile has a range of 2,000 kilometers, and is capable of reaching Israel, US Army bases in the Middle East and eastern European cities, including Moscow.

According to the Channel 10 report, the new missile is an improvement on the existing Shihab-3 missile. The Ashoura uses solid fuel instead of the Shihab's liquid fuel. This provides for a significantly faster launch sequence which is harder to detect.

Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Mostafa Muhammad-Najjar had announced the development of the new missile on the day of the summit, but had not said that it had actually been tested.

Iran in my estimation remains a big threat in terms of backing terrorism and developing weapons of mass destruction such as nukes.

Israel is not buying the U.S. Intelligence report that says,Iran halted its Nuclear Program in 2003.They may know much more than the U.S. about what is going on there.

If Israel wants war, then they should go to war and keep it to themselves. I think Israel wants the US to attack first so they can enter later.

This back and forth is becoming stupid.

If the need arises for action, and I stress the word if, then Israel should be the country that takes the lead militarily this time around. After all we have been pumping huge amounts of weapons and funding into the country for 50 years now, and is time once again for them to demonstrate why this is a wise investment.

For a long time,I haved been thinking that the U.S. will not start the air strikes of the nuke plants, but Israel will do so.I notice by reading the latest information between the lines that has comed out from Israel,is that they are hungry to do it.

If a nuclear war between Israel and Iran were to break out 16-20 million Iranians would lose their lives - as opposed to 200,000-800,000 Israelis, according to a report recently published by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which is headed by Anthony H. Cordesman, formerly an analyst for the US Department of Defense. The document, which is largely theoretical due to the lack of verified knowledge in some areas - specifically in terms of Israel's nuclear capability - paints various scenarios and attempts to predict the strategies of regional powers, as well as the US.

The report assesses that a nuclear war would last approximately three weeks and ultimately end with the annihilation of Iran, due to Israel's alleged possession of weapons with a far larger yield. Israel, according to the assessment, would have a larger chance of survival. The report does not attempt to predict how many deaths would eventually be caused by possible nuclear fallout.

Israel could survive nuclear war

The above articule is full of very bad scenarios, should hostilities break out between Iran and Israel.Hopefully, nothing of this occurs.
