When I was getting my new laptop, I was between 2 HPs - one with intel and one with amd. The guy at CompUSA (2 of them actually because my in-laws went the next day and had a different salesman, but asked the same thing) said that intel is better - it runs cooler. He said it without skipping a beat, and there was really no price difference, so he wasn't trying to upsell me or anything. I've always had intel comps, so that's all I know, but running cooler is a big deal when it comes to laptops, in my opinion....

Thats what I was thinking if I get 1Gb of ram that should be enough. I am stuck between the intel and the amd though and what size processor. All I do is surf??

1GB of ram is the recommended amount you need to run it properly.

as people have said upgrading to vista is a real pain than getting a computer with Vista on it.

I know of people who have upgraded their pc to Vista and like 30 mins later put XP back on as they had driver support issues i.e printers etc etc

Intel chips do run cooler than comparable AMD chips. The AMD chips, however, run more operations per second, so they process data faster than comparable Intel chips. Take the AMD. Heat isn't by itself a bad thing.

I want to get a new Dell LapTop but all I have seen offered is Vista...the software that I use for my medical transcription will not work with Vista, so therefore I can't use Vista. Does anyone know if Dell will put XP on instead of Vista?

when you buy new computers now it MUST come with windows Vista. anything else and the company can be sued from Microsoft for thousands of dollars for such a breach.

Actually, you still can buy new PC with XP on it. At least Dell and Lenovo will let you until the end of year. You also can buy a Dell with Linux (Ubuntu) installed.

Thanks Lurker...that is what I need to do, because who knows when the medical transcription company will upgrade their product to work with Vista, shoot they have problems if you use the Windows updates sometimes!

Why hello, fellow MT ! Well, actually I'm supposed to do an intensive 6 month training course early next year followed by a 3 month internship (all paid for by our government, except for the cost of textbooks - Barbados is looking to become a major player in this field) before I qualify to be an MT but it's my understanding that there's a severe shortage of MTs, so a job is pretty much guaranteed once I successfully complete the course.

Thanks for the tip on Windows Vista not being compatible with the software you use. I'll have to do some more investigation to see if I would run into the same situation. (I'm about to buy a new computer and need to consider the pros & cons of Vista versus XP, Windows vs Mac etc.)

Dell is offering a lot of their computers with a Vista license but delivered with XP installed. The nice thing about this option is that you get the machine factory installed with XP and yet have 2 install CD's ( XP and Vista) if you decide to upgrade to Vista. You also get a drivers disk for each O/S. This is what we're doing in the company now to give us the option to upgrade in the future without jumping on the Vista bandwagon right now.

When I bought my new desktop not too long ago, I splurged. Granted, I built my computer rather than wasting money on Dell or those companies. With that said, I got Vista Ultimate. Yeah, I've heard all the complaining about Vista, and to be truthful, I think it's a lot of folks not used to Vista. I honestly love Vista. Yeah, initially there are a few things to get used to or to disable (such as the "Are you sure you want to run this?"), but after a few days... I preferred Vista over XP. (I actually hate using the work computers because they're not as nice as my home computer anymore.)

To piggy-back... speaking about drivers, a lot of the things I had before on my XP desktop, I had to manually install drivers. (At least load a CD.) With Vista... plug-and-play.

For instance, my printer/scanner... I just connected it via USB and within a matter of seconds, it found the driver it needed, installed it, and I was ready to go.

Vista is awful. When I replace my laptop, I'm formatting it and installing XP.

Who says that you don't have a choice? There's going to be lots of used computers out there with XP on them for cheap. Old CRT-type monitors too.

I picked up a perfectly good 19" monitor at a yard sale for $2.00. The reason it was for sale - "I just went to a flat screen." Well la-de-da.

I have gotten over the idea that you have to have the latest and greatest. If it serves my needs, it's fine, and I can spend my money on something else.

XP seems like a very good OS. Of course, so was NT, and one of my machines with NT is running so well, I still use it when the others are occupied.

BTW I just purchased MS office 2007 through the "home use program." I've been wanting Excel, etc, at home for a long time, and I procrastinated to the point that I was forced to get the new version. It has all the ribbons and stuff that Vista has, and it practically chokes my computer. For what? I say. My spreadsheets work just fine on Office 2003. I'm tellin ya, they keep coming out with these new things simply to keep the $$$ flowing.

Actually, computers with XP are expensive, because the majority of consumers dislike Vista. They are actively seeking computers with XP installed on them; Dell offers XP on its computers, but the XP computers are much more expensive than the Vista ones.
