This may be a stupid question, but...

I know that cyclones HAVE to have warm water to survive. However, could the 'inertia' of Dean's incredible strengthening keep him stronger than normal even over the Yucatan? Or, in other words, would he spin down slower?

Dean is strengthening as he makes landfall, and the upper air pattern should remain unbelievably favorable. That's probably the only reason why Dean will likely not weaken too much over the Yucatan.

BTW, could someone do me a favor please? It involves satellite images. PM me for more details.

Dean's eye is well inland and his sat appearance continues to be UNREAL. Im just stunned.

To back this up. The eye is almost completely onshore, yet LOOK at the western cloud tops in the image above

I truly do wonder what he will come of the coast as....I mean he hasn't even flinched and his eye is almost totally inland.

Also, Dean has wobbled WSW putting Chetumal VERY close or in the southern eyewall. Look for SEVERE damage similar to that produced by Charley.

I tell you what would be CRAZY. Imagine Dean exits into the Pacific and turns into a major cane AGAIN and hits Hawaii. Seriously though think it has ever happened??? Hopefully Dean will weaken alot but I bet he still holds 100mph at least once he reaches the Bay of Campeche. You hardly ever see a Cat5 cane hold up this well making landfall. Simply amazing how the eyewall looks all around that is. History in the making.

Truly horrific. What saddens me is there is nothing I can do to help those people....you can only just watch in horror.

I'm simply awe-struck. In all my years of watching the tropics, nothing tops this. Not even Katrina. Not even Andrew.
The eye is entirely over land, and the system has shown no sign of weakening, in fact it appears to be intensifying slightly. Absolutely incredible. Jaw dropping. A full blown Category Five landfall, intensifying as it continues inland. Simply and utterly amazing.
