Re: Major Hurricane DEAN: (8 PM page 291) Discussions, Analysis
Amazing, after a year of nothing last year, the first hurricane of the year is a Cat 5! Makes you wonder what's ahead...
Cat 5's are rare to begin with, 1999-2002 had NONE. We've had 6 since then, including an all-time record of 4 in 2005.

But, they were expecting a category five, now they have it. It was pretty much inevitable.

Unfortunately, Dean is following the trend of many hurricanes to increase prior to landfall in this area of the Caribbean. I'd imagine Janet was similar.
The eye is slightly sharper and clearer on IR.

I cant imagine how bad this storm is going to be at landfall.
There's a poster from another forum who is in Chetumal right now. He's writing that it's pretty much a ghost town with everything boarded up. He's going to ride it out there tonight.

Dean has a high probability of joining the very select group of making landfall at the category 5 threshold. His name will never be used again.

Are there structures like hotels that are safe inside during a cat 5? Pretty big gamble to stay there.

Since Dean is a Category 5, maybe they will take it even more seriously. It's going to be scary for sure.

The damage difference is minimal between a high Cat 4 and a low Cat 5. That is just a psychological barrier.

It's probably one of the craziest things I've ever heard one do (flew from LA to Cancun, drove down to Chetumal). He's taken some before pics. Let's hope he's still around to take "after" pics. Anyway, if I am allowed to quote him:
"I was glad to get back to my hotel and find the lobby buzzing with activity-- including what seem to be lots of TV people. I'm not riding this out alone, praise the lord"

If it stays at Cat 5 until landfall, it will be the first landfalling Cat 5 in the Western Hemisphere since Andrew.

Most likely; it will resemble Hancock County, MS or Plaquemines Parish, LA after Katrina. Hopefully they have all been evacuated!

Looks like it's on a beeline for Chetumal now... I'm afraid he's underestimated this one. I know he wants to be in the worst part of it, but I'm not sure he wants to be in the worst of THIS one.

And not only have we had a record number of Cat 5s in such a short time, but the Cat 5s keep breaking records....storm surges, pressures, etc. It seems that every time we get an August or September storm now we can expect it to break a record.
