Tornado Watch and Flood Watch....Lincoln, NE

#1 Postby weatherwunder » Sun Jun 22, 2003 4:28 pm

urgent - immediate broadcast requested Tornado Watch number 562 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 335 PM CDT sun Jun 22 2003

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of

Western Iowa central and eastern Nebraska southeast South Dakota

Effective this Sunday afternoon and evening from 335 PM until 900 PM CDT.

... This is a particularly dangerous situation...

Destructive tornadoes... large hail to 3 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Tornado Watch area is along and 120 statute miles east and west of a line from 30 miles northwest of Sioux Falls South Dakota to 45 miles south southeast of Hastings Nebraska.

Remember... a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

Other watch information... continue... ww 559... ww 560... ww 561...

Discussion... thunderstorms expected to develop rapidly later this afternoon in zone of low level convergence near cold front/outflow boundary intersection in N cntrl/NE neb. Other storms may develop sewd along outflow boundary into se neb... and swd along cold front into S cntrl neb later this evening as cap is broken by continued surface heating. Combination of moderate low to mid level speed and directional shear... coupled with high boundary layer moisture content... suggest possibility for strong tornadoes in addition to very large hail/high winds. Activity should evolve into an mcs later this evening... with overall mcs motion toward the se.

Aviation... tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 3 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 550. Mean storm motion vector 26030.

Flood Watch / Flood Statement
Expires 8:00 AM CDT on June 23, 2003

Statement as of 2:41 PM CDT on June 22, 2003

The National Weather Service in Omaha has issued a Flood Watch for the following counties in southeast Nebraska... Butler... Cass... Seward... Lancaster... Otoe... Saline... Nemaha... gage... Johnson... Jefferson... Richardson and Pawnee... and also Fremont County in far southwest Iowa. The Flood Watch is in effect until 600 am CDT Monday morning.

Thunderstorms are likely to develop over southeast Nebraska and far southwest Iowa late this afternoon or tonight. There is a chance that these storms will produce excessive rain resulting in flooding or flash flooding. The ground is moist from recent heavy rainfall. A combination of high humidity and a slow moving front approaching the area means that conditions are favorable for more heavy rain to develop tonight.

A Flood Watch means that flooding of small streams... creeks and other drainage areas is possible in the watch area. If you are in the watch area... keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to take immediate action if flooding develops. If a Flash Flood Warning is issued... do not stay in areas that may flood. Move to higher ground.
