Tigergirl...you'd think our schoolboards here in louisiana would figure out that August is usually the hottest month of the year. I still can't figure out why these dodo's insist on starting school in that heat. Wait! Image could they be the reason louisiana is one of the lowest rated states for education?

I have agree with you 110%, not on the last sentence however! Az. is ranked right down there with y'all too! And see, that's another thing, schools in Phoenix start the same friggin' week! I mean, temps in the 110's+ and they expect the kids at FOOTBALL practice, well D'OH!

August 6th here too in Pascagoula, not sure of the county schools or Moss Point, Ocean Springs but to me that is just tooooo early.

I know we didn't go till the Tuesday after Labor Day when I was young (LONG time ago) but back then we didn't have AC in the schools...they do these days. But you would think the School system didn't want to pay for all that AC bill in the hottest month of the year and they keep PHS freezing. All the kids take sweaters or jackets, even though they have to be of "uniform" color and certain style. But our kids wear Kaki or Navy Blue Pants and Red, Blue or School Shirts everyday and closed toed shoes and a belt! NO low riders allowed, shirts tucked in all the time. We had He!! getting the school board to understand that the Band kids needed to change clothes the last period of the day before they went out on the practice field from 1:50 to 3:25....they didn't seem to understand that......??? and these are educated people??

Oh no Tennis Shoes what so ever! In K-5 they can wear WHITE tennis shoes with no decorations and ankle socks.

The school systems does enforce these rules and guidelines pretty harsly. And they have a couple of "teacher work days" built in the schedule....come on...and we also get three days off at Mardi Gras that I didn't get when I was in school. If you wanted to go to the Mardi Gras parade you had to skip class, I never did that (shakes her head with a smile) and now they try to schedule Spring Break with Good Friday so they don't have to give them "another day off" and get another "teacher work day" that way.

Don't want teachers fussing at me....kudos to those that teach, I certainly could not do it! But everybody has a job and we don't get "special off days with no patients/clients/consumers coming in to bother us". All teachers have my utmost respect and thanks for trying to teach my kids something :) which they actually did! Takes a special person to be a teacher and God love them cause they need all the extra help they can get.

Mary

PS but let us have a storm and miss a day of school...you know the first thing to go is the Mardi Gras Holiday or they try and cut the Thanksgiving or Christmas Holidays short, not the "teacher work day"!

I agree, Aug is way to hot to start school here in SE LA. I remember when I was in Elem. they were finally installing a/c in the schools!!! (I'm only 37)

To answer the question, "What is fall break"? When school starts Aug 8, the only holiday we have before Thanksgiving is Labor day. Which is only one day. So the LPSB decided to give us a "fall break" in Oct. We will get off Wed,Thur,&Fri. Now we have another non national holiday like Mardi Gras to go to Disney without the large crowds!!!

I have to say Florida is down there, too. I moved here in 2003 and oh boy. I felt like I was in dumbville. I have been #1-5 in all of my classes except math. I'm glad they moved school back 2 weeks this year.

Along with the Mardi Gras holiday, I believe and correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Tampa schools get a holiday for Gasparilla.

Tues. August 21 (staff, which includes me)
Wed. August 22 (students)

Next year's start is even earlier, last time I checked it was a Monday/Wednesday start, Aug. 18th and 20th.

They keep moving up the date!

School here starts Sept 5th. I don't even want to think about it yet. They have only been out one month today!

Miss Mary, do you have one starting her senior year?? This high school thing seems to be going way too fast. I am not ready for them to grow up yet!

Yes I do. Good memory! I've been thru this before (her sister) so I know how incredibly busy this senior year can be. The last this or that, all year long. You seem to write checks for everything and are always sending in pictures, contributing to memorabilia, volunteering, etc. but it's a fun year too. It goes much too quickly, IMHO.

What I noticed with her sister's, a good friend of ours prepared us for that year. They said cherish the last Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, family vacation. Because once they start college and move away, it is never the same again. How right he was. But at the time I thought, oh it will be different but she'll come home on visits. Wrong! She has received summer internship jobs away from home so if I totaled the weeks she is home now, it would be about 7 or 8 - a year! I have cried but I quickly dry my tears b/c she is doing what she wants and has excellent goals in place.

But that senior year is a special one. Do you have a senior this year? I'll pass along that advice - cherish all of those memories!

Some of ours in the Phoenix area are year-round schools, but here in Scottsdale I noticed the sign on the school in our neighborhood says orientation on August 23rd.

The students come running back through the doors on August 23. I, on the other hand, have been in the classroom for a week or so now in the evenings trying to get some things in order. I officially have to come back starting on August 6. I will spend all day August 7 (my birthday) in meetings and working on curriculum. YAY! :P
