Article updated:

A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport before exploding, police have confirmed.

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended.

One eyewitness said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke smoke coming out.

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

New info:

A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, police have confirmed.

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

A Whitehall spokesman said the incident was not being treated as a national security threat.

One eyewitness said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out.

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

Eye-witness Richard Gray told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning.

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.

"The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

Taxi driver Ian Crosby said: "This was no accident. This was a deliberate attack on Glasgow Airport."

The reaction of members of the public was not to help the men in the car, but to restrain them, he told the BBC.

Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs.

Four arrested so far, you can watch BBC News 24 coverage online:

EDIT - the latest is the police are saying two cars crashed, sending one careening in flames towards the airport. Whitehall (London) says that it's not a national security threat. Eyewitnesses however claim it was a premeditated terrorist attack.

Armed police have closed Blackpool Airport in NW England. No word on what happened...

Now Sky News reports that the hospital where the car bomb suspect being treated has been evacuated. Very strange.

Now BBC is talking about an unconfirmed report of an explosion at Heathrow ...

EDIT: Scotland Yard says no explosion, but a car fire ...

OK, the Heathrow event was nothing ... just an engine fire in a car.

ok - I know what it is - there were 2 different incidents - one at Glasgow and one at Heathrow. The one at Heathrow was an accident. The one of Glasogow appears to not have been.

There were reports of an incident at Heathrow airport this evening, but police said it was a "non-suspicious car fire".

Right. The Glasgow event seems to have actually been an attack.

Right. The Glasgow event seems to have actually been an attack.

Yeah, I agree.

Though it doesn't seem to have been very organized. It'll have a huge emotional impact but really didn't do much fortunately physically to the people in the airport.

It bears a striking similarity to the London incidents yesterday. The cars in those incidents were stolen from... Scotland!

When will these idiots realize that the world is not going to just "roll over and play dead" just because they use terrorist tactics? It definitely sucks when the lives of innocent people are lost but, it will NEVER stop us from living our lives the way we choose! You'd think that after decades of their attempts to stop our way of life failing, they would at some point try to find a more diplomatic way to achieve their end goal!

I know that the Earth is not a Utopia but, I hope that someday we humans can find a way to coexist peacefully!
