Just a little levity early in the season. I guess we shall see if Mom's prophetic statement rings true in the coming months.

My mother, who lives with us, has pronounced that a hurricane will definitely hit us this year. What data prompted her come to this conclusion? Well... our neighbor whose roof was damaged in Katrina finally had her roof replaced this weekend. Therefore, we're doomed-- at least according to my dear mother.

Baygirl1;
I can totally understand what you're saying. Friday morning I had to leave work to go bring my Dad to Home Depot to buy MORE plywood. Last week all he'd talk about is "This is hurricane weather!" When I'd ask why he'd just insist that this is hurricane weather. By Friday he couldn't take it anymore and just had to have more plywood and an extra 50 gallons of gas for his generator. I finally gave in and it seems to have settled him down a bit but he's still worried.

Jagno, I agree with your father. I think this is hurricane weather too. This is based on nothing scientific, but just a few of my own biases and preconceptions.
1. An unseasonably cool spring. Very near Easter we had temps, wind chills, and overcast conditions that were more akin to mid-winter.
2. Pretty consisitent rainy pattern now. Hot dry summers for all their warm temps seem to bring fewer storms up here along the North Central Gulf Coast. Perhaps its because hot dry weather infers strong blocking high pressure at the surface.
3. "Bad Moon"--This poem which I wrote back during the first week of June referred to some very unusual weather around here, which I took as a sort of "bad omen" for the hurricane season. After Barry moved into Fl., I expected we'd see the dry north winds on the west side of the storm. But it was strange. We got into this W-E flow with powerful and fast moving upper level systems racing through here from out of nowhere. Very freaky storms come out of nowhere, with a lot of lightning. They interrupted what were ordinarily cooler and drier conditions than normal for early June. For several evenings we had thunder that rumbled all night long. Very strange for summertime along this coast. I wrote of these conditions in "Bad Moon".

SSTs will continue to heat up and rise and be very high by August
across the GOM. All I can say is let's home that no
storms get into the GOM, because if they do...
then they could explode...

I was out canoe camping on the Blackwater River that morning. Hardest sleet I have seen in my life. The river was in flood and blocked by some trees. We spent the better part of at least 2 hours in the water and wading through a flooded swamp to portage around...thought I would freeze to death!!

unfortunately, i agree. Everyone here is talking about the "hurricane weather" they feel too, how hot it is, the pecan trees are FULL (which is always a bad sign), gut feelings, etc. It seems as though AL/MS/LA people get the feeling another one is gonna hit us this season.
