unusually low temps
Can u set me straight once and for all about low temps in MAY and JUNE for south florida. I know there is a correlation between unusually dry months and hurricanes but is there a correlation between unusually low temps and hurricanes? It seems as if it should be hotter here in south florida. It has been low to mid 80's when it should be closer to the upper 80's for highs. Any input would be great.....thanks.

Re: unusually low temps
Gee, you think? There have been the per usual number of very uncomfortable days here in South Florida since the beginning of May (DP's during any 24-hour period between 70 and 78 with constant 24-hour temps between 75-88) so, it seems about average, however...
what has been unusual are varied northern parts of the country that are still seeing overnight temps in the low 50s - in fact, if some here happened to watch the live coverage of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (in northwestern France) on the Speed Channel this past weekend, it was amazing to be able to see everyone's breath during the early morning hours - even the announcers said that they were all wearing jackets to keep warm...
Since France is at the same latitude as the many of the northern states in this country, to me that says that the cool overnight temps seen here so far this summer are also being seen in Europe - as to why, I don't know (other than a volcanic eruption or two last year that might be causing this), but, about 10 days ago TWC did mention that some in the northeast are still waiting for Summer to arrive...
P.S. If it's true about the volcanic eruptions, that could significantly change (lower) the outcome of this hurricane season...

I just said that to my sister n law this past Friday night that the humidity was low and usually we have to cut the humidity with a knife. She lives in California.

Re: unusually low temps
It seemed to me that May was not that hot here in East Central Florida either....but that was mostly due to the fact that there was an unusual amount of windy days that kept the temps down, especially closer to the coast as would be expected.

It'd be interesting if anyone here knows about any significant volcanic eruptions last year - I thought there might have been one or even two...
As was mentioned in the "Year Without Summer" program (perhaps TWC or PBS) last year, the hurricane seasons after Krakatoa (1884)and after several eruptions in 1918 and 1919 were almost void of activity due to the worldwide lower temps caused by the large amount of suspended ash...

Re: unusually low temps
Enjoy the cooler temps...
Last week and then about 2-3 weeks ago, it was brutally hot (had a couple of days above 100) here in Tallahassee.

I think the windier than usual May made it seem like it has been cooler than normal.
There was a thread a couple of weeks ago where the unusual "windiness (sp)" of May was compared to 2004 (12 mph average in 2007 vs. 12 mph in 2004) as opposed to 8 mph average in 2005 and 2006.
Actual average temp was not well below average but felt so due to the winds.
Lastly, we all know what kind of Hurricane season South Florida had in 2004 so lets hope the correlation between the winds in 04 and 07 are strictly coinicidence.

Thinking it must have been the breeze...or maybe the humidity was lower than normal, but according to NWS Miami (http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=mfl" target="_blank), most South Florida reporting stations were actually above normal for minimum nighttime temps for the month of May 2007:
Fort Lauderdale

Re: unusually low temps
I don't know, I think it's been plenty hot. With May, perhaps I see your point, but June has been typically unbearable. The dry days seems to be more dry than normal, but that just allows for the ridiculously strong June sun to make its presence felt.
I just don't like this feast or famine thing we've been getting into with the rainfall, where it's either wet for most of the day (because of some "rain event") or dry for most of the day. What kind of effect this might have on hurricanes, I have no idea...but I suspect it might actually be detrimental to hurricane formation and sustenance due to dry air. On balance, we seem to be getting more dry...just my feeling.

Drive across the state tonight to Pine Island, and see what it feels like when you open the motel door at 7 AM. If that is not convincing enough, feel free to stay all day and see if it feels "cool". It's been 79 F the past 4 mornings, throw in the humidity, it's 84 at 6 AM. Might as well be in Key West.
