Smoke in GA/FL

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Tue May 08, 2007 2:02 pm

Take a look at the visible loop of 90L. You can clearly see the smoke streaming off of the large forest fires in GA and FL. Hope this comes in and douses those fires soon! I am traveling to FL on Thursday and would like to see clear skies or even some rain from this system- not smoke. Baaaaad.

my son lives in Tampa and said they woke to find ash on the car this morning. he said that at 9am this morning it looked like it was almost dusk.. it's a fairly large fire. i hope they get it contained for the sake of the 700 folks who were evaucated from their homes.

The smoke moved into SW florida early this afternoon and is so thick you can taste it.. We do havea number of fires in the area but most of this smoke is from the fires up north as you can see a visable sat. 400 acres burned a few miles from me yesterday and had I-75 closed as well. Same thing in Collier..

Thread non tropical and thus moved here.

It was real bad this morning...it's a little better now, but that burning grass smell is still in the air and it's really hazy here in Hillsborough County.

It's pretty bad in Miami, too. Visibility has dropped to around 2-3 miles.

I think the winds are shifting around from the Northwest. Thats good news for the Tampa bay area, bad news for the East coast.

They just mentioned on the news here smoke advisories all the way down to Key West. Crazy!

In fact - the radar is even showing it moving south:

Alot worse here today than yesterday.
Its hard to see the smoke on the visible satellite this morning because of 90Ls cloud cover starting to roll in.

The heavy smoke cleared out around 6pm nicely.. This morning we had a spectacular pink sun in the sky! It was beautiful. You can still see the haze today but it has lifted as the temperature inversion isn't as prominent as yesterday.

Due to strong northwest surface winds, there is heavy smoke spreading across portions of southern Florida. Upper-level winds carried overnight smoke from the Collier County fires (and central Florida and Georgia blazes). The reduced visibility closed portions of Alligator Alley. Visibility is down to 3.5 miles at my location in Palm Beach County. Smoke was extensive during the night but visibility worsened during the daylight hours. The extent of the hazy conditions is among the worst visibility reductions I have experienced.
