More Temperature Records Fall

#1 Postby P.K. » Mon Apr 30, 2007 5:00 pm

I'm starting to lose track here of all these records over the last couple of years. The Central England Temperature [CET] figure for April was 11.2C which is 0.6C above the highest on record back to 1659 of 10.6C set in 1865. The 1971-2000 mean is only 8.1C.

Apart from five days of SW-lies between 21st and 25th, high pressure lay over or close to the British Isles throughout April; overall it was the 11th most anticyclonic April in 134 years of records. As measured by the CET it was the warmest April since records began in 1659; it was also the eighth driest April since at least 1766, and the third sunniest April since at least 1881.

Certainly safe to say that this April has been pretty stunning, at times the maxes have been a little above what you'd expect in summer here in the SE.

I thought 1659 was in the little ice age? This is weird.

^^ Yes, it was. The article doesn't say anything about the temperatures in 1659, only that observations started in that year.

CET for April 1659 was 7C, much cooler than last month.
