Other People's Marriages
Have you ever known a couple who are just so "right" together that you can't imagine them ever being apart? Some friends of ours are like that. We've known them for years, and Dean just couldn't bring himself to get married, being an old man of 50. LOL! After 10 years together, he finally came to his senses and married Patty. They were great together pre-marriage, but after marriage, it's obvious their lives are even better than ever. I don't mean that they're constantly hanging on one another, it's just a cknd of confidence and security that radiates from them both and makes them a joy to be around. Kind of an odd thought, but there's not many couples I get that feeling from. Am I making any sense?

Jen, I know what you mean. It's as if they were meant for each other. My Mom and Dad were a lot like that. I heard him raise his voice to her one time. He would alway say, "Babe, let's put on a pot of coffee and talk." I knew they were having a serious conversation then!! He died when he was 54. Mom is 84 and has never had another date or another man in her life. We would try to talk her into dating and she would always say, "Once you've driven a Cadillac, you just don't want to drive any other car." She's really a pretty woman - inside and out. They were "soul mates". They were best friends. As Forrest Gump would say, "they went together like peas and carrots".
Alice, they were inspirational!!!

My father was dating my mama's younger sister, but when he came to get her she refused to go out and told my mama he's too old and stuffy (19 yrs old) so my mama went to the car to tell him Nina was too young and didn't want to see him anymore. He asked my mama if she was doing anything and she said not a darn thing and as my grandmother used to say "that was that". My poor aunt ended up marrying five times. My parents were soul mates. They lived, laughed, loved, fought, played and made love. I remember a day when I was young when my parents started wetting each other with a hose and us kids spurring them on and laughing and rolling in the grass. We used to tease my papa that his shorts were going to fall off and one day in the back yard they did. Mama started laughing and my papa was embarassed and said oh yeah and her nightgown had a little hole and he started ripping the gown and she started running and it ripped and she started laughing and us kids were going nuts. They would tell us kids to play and take off to the bedroom. They had rough times, but their love was strong enough to overcome in law problems, financial difficulties, health problems. Papa would bring mama a single chocolate cherry for Valentines Day because he couldn't afford anything more, but he never forgot holidays. Once when we were on vacation their was very little privacy with four children, one grandchild, and my grandparents, and my mama and papa said they were going to get ice cream. They found a field and made love but a farmer came out with a flashlight and shotgun to find out what was going on. They were in their early forties. I wish I could have seen the look on the farmers face.

When I was in my twenties, my mother started acting very cold toward my papa. I knew something was wrong but she wouldn't tell me what it was. My father was going bananas wondering what he had done. They even were talking about divorce. I got physically sick and ended up with pneumonia. The moral to this story is never ever jump to conclusions. My mother had found a female watch in my fathers pocket and thought he was having an affair. My father had found the watch at one of the stores he serviced. He left his name and number in case someone came to claim the watch. He was going to give it to my older sister for her birthday. When my mama found out the truth (oh yes she called the store and verified his story), she cried for hours and my papa cried for hours and then they had a honeymoon that lasted for at least ten years. I guess you kind of take someone for granted until that love is threatened. It was like a slap in the face to both of them how much they loved each other. Now for a funny story. This is my parents version of empty nest syndrome. She says they were like teenagers again after the four of us had left home. She says her mind was eighteen but her body wasn't. One morning she whispered sweet naughty nothings in my papa's ear before he went to work. She had a rough day and was tired and when my papa called to see if she needed anything, he said are you ready to Rock and Roll Baby. She got off the phone and groaned. My mama went and got a pair of his ratty old pants and tied a rope around her waist. A shirt that was in the rag bin. Mama rolled her hair in pieces of white rags and dirtied her face and colored pieces of paper black and put them on some of her teeth. When my papa came to the door, his eyes got big, but my papa was always real quick with a come back, and said come here you sexy woman and give your sugar daddy a great big kiss. Mama said she found one of the white rags she was wearing in her hair on the ceiling lighting fixture the next day.
