I am American. I don't celebrate May 5 as a holiday.

Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Valentines? Mardi Gras? Catholic holidays!

May the 5th is the day the Mexicans overthrew the French armies which were occupying their country.

If someone in Canada who is fond of the United States decides to cook hamburgers on the 4th of July, does that dampen their patriotism? :P

Mexico and the US are the only places were Cinco de Mayo is celebrated. I never heard about it in Cuba.

Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated in Cuba or Spain since it's purely a Mexican celebration to commerate the victory of an untrained and outnumbered peasant militia over the French troops in the battle of Puebla (not the overthrow of Maximillian which occurred later). In Mexico, it's mainly a regional holiday and not widely celebrated and it is not Mexican Independence Day (which is September 16th). It is clebrated far more widely and vigorously in the US and has become a day to celebrate Mexican-American heritage and culture. In Border towns and cities with large Mexican-American populations (like Chicago and Los Angeles) it has become a genuine festival and in fact here in Sierra Vista it will be a three day celebration in the Park with vendors. food stands and a Carnival. Despite the problems with illegals, it's important to remember that there are many American citizens and legal immigrants of Mexican descent in this Country and like other immigrant group holidays in the past Cinco de Mayo has become an American Holiday and besides, it's a great reason to party!
