Math

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Mon Apr 30, 2007 7:03 pm

I hate math:

1) logbase5 (x-1) +log base5 (x-2) - Logbase5 (x+6)= 0
A) solve for X
B) show your work

2) If 1+2i is one root of X^3 +x +10 = 0, find the other two roots.
A) show your work

3) If F(x) is a linear function and f(1)=2 and f(3)=7, find an equation for f(x) in terms of x.
A) show your work

4) (2x-5)/4 < (4-3x)/ 2.
A) solve for X
B) show your work

5) find the sum and product of the roots of the equation x^3 - 19x - 30 =0
A) show your work

This is supposed to be review from ALG1, but that was 3 years ago and I dont remember it.

Thank You in advance!

Remember the order for solving equations?

*snicker* @ "show your work." I remember kids who used to just jot a bunch of numbers and "X=(whatever the answer was from the back of the book)" on their papers and got credit for doing their work. Blah! Truth came out at test time.

Just remember -- study and learn the formulas and you can plug in any equation and solve it. Good luck!

Do kids still ask "When will I need this later in life?"

I can't remember half of yesterday let alone most of the calculus I took. I don't even bother to balance my check book.....MGC

Book or not, there's still an order for solving them. :) Guess I shouldn't have said "formula" though for those equations -- certain not the same context as formulas for calculus.

Maths are hard m'kay.

Search the internet if your books don't give the necessary information. Or wait until Derek comes into the thread.

1) x = 2 + 2*sqrt(2), 2 - 2*sqrt(2)

The log's sum to zero; therefore (x-1)(x-2)/(x+6) = 1.

2) 1-2i, -2

Roots of equations with real coefficients come in complex conjugate pairs, then factor (x^2-2x+5)(x+2) = 0.

3) f(x) = 5x/2 - 1/2

f(x) = mx + b; therefore 2 = m + b and 7 = 3m + b. Solve for m and b.

4) x < 13/8

Multiply by 4 to clear fractions, then simplify.

5) product = 30
sum = 0

product = -constant term, sum = coeficient of x^2. BTW the roots are: 5, -3, -2.

I graduated from high school 45 years ago this month!

It didnt help anyway, I had to turn it in with those 5 problems blank, just to get more work to do.

Thank you.

"Show your work" means just that -- "your" work. It wouldn't have been wise for you to turn in this thread as the "work" you did to solve the problems. Not to mention, when it came time for a test, what were you going to do?

Re-read that sentence carefully and you'll get our point.
