Not So Wet Here...

I'm sitting at 1.48" of moisture in the new year thus far. That cold January here used as much electricity as a warm July usually uses! And we don't burn wood in the fireplaces here because of the "brown cloud" that already hovers over the city in cold weather.

Well, my old stompin' grounds of north central Illinois is getting a dose of winter over the weekend with snow, sleet, rain, probably thunder, and some strong winds for three days!

I'll take the high of 67 this afternoon on sunny skies.

I'm at 1.25" for the year and tell me about January-my electric bill was the highest it's ever been because of heating requirements (we get much colder than you).

How does the precipitation that the two of you received so far measure up to the average? I hope it's higher than normal

1.39" for the month, 2.87" usual = 48% of normal
3.49" for th year, 5.63" normal = 62% of normal


Here the grass is Orange and allergies are very high.

We have burned a FULL "3 cords" of wood this winter I have NEVER, in 40 years, burned THIS much WOOD. My supervisor, who does not burn wood, his heating last month was OVER $460 for the month of January!!

Rainfall for the YTD is 0.36in below normal. However, for the Hydrological year (which begins October 1st) which is the important number we are 2.06 inches below normal. I had a cold wet January here but January was not wetter than normal in TUS or other parts of our valley as I and the Post caught a heavy shower that boosted our numbers for January. The storm that gave me 0.55in on the 19th totalled 0.60in here and 0.69in on Post but only 0.43 in 3 miles to my East while Hereford and Palominas got over an inch-helps to be in close to the mountains and in terrain induced convergence zones.

Well, I hope that you continue to get decent moisture down in AZ and the SW and that the deficit doesn't become larger.

We are rapidly losing the chances for decent rainfall as Spring is typically our driest season (and windiest) with May our driest month. Normal Spring rainfall is not usually good for anything other than getting cars dirty. We will have to wait for the Summer monsoon before getting our hopes up.
