Miss Mary wrote:About 6 inches out here in Anderson. Our school district is closed today so I am off work! And my daughter is of course off school. There are so many closings today, even day care facilities. I read that the Univ. of Cincinnati would have a delayed start of 10 a.m. That was about the only school still having classes today! Wait, WNKU in N. KY where you attend Jeremy is having a delayed start of noon.

Jeremy - agree. They called this storm accurately. I watched it start and by 2, 2:30 and 3 it was picking up in intensity. That is when Operation Snow went into effect I believe. Our Mayor asked gov. offices and large downtown corporations to release employees early. One employee was interviewed on the news, he said something to this effect - "they told us to leave early, go get our kids, go home, stay home and chili". Only problem was, all of these employees hit the interstates about at the same time as snowplows and salt trucks did. The trucks couldn't do their jobs b/c there were so many cars stuck in traffic. I saw a live update at 10 p.m. last night. I 75 in Northern Kentucky was still all backed up!

Mary

That was the one problem with Operation Snow. My thinking is, if they're going to use it, then they should be staggered as to the times certain companies should dismiss. I.E. a few of them at 11, another few businesses at 11:30, etc. until all of the companies that agreed to participate have dismissed their workers. THEN you can start treating roads a little better. And, IMO it didn't help just limiting it to downtown. Ask companies throughout the city.

Oops, that quote on the news was supposed to be - ".......make chili...." ! LOL I'm sure people got it though.

Years ago I worked for a doctor's office and we never got off! We worked right up until our normal closing time and had to fight all that traffic.

But that's a very good idea on staggering the times employees are released early.

Yeah, IF they use it. I doubt they're going to listen to someone outside the city on this. However I've lived in this area 21 years. I know what's working and what's not when it comes down to snow removal. The idea of Operation Snow is fantastic. It's just that the basic elements need tweaking.

Winter Storm Watch posted for Monday afternoon, evening and into Tuesday night.

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/fin ... =45255#WIN

For Cincinnati:

Winter Storm Watch in effect from Monday afternoon through
late Tuesday night...

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Winter
Storm Watch... which is in effect from Monday afternoon through
late Tuesday night.

A low pressure system will move out of the Southern Plains on
Monday and into the lower Tennessee Valley on Tuesday. Abundant
Gulf moisture will be pulled north into the Ohio Valley on Monday
night and Tuesday as the low passes to the south of the region.
This will bring wintry precipitation to the region.

Precipitation will begin on Monday afternoon as a cold front drops
south across the region. Current indications are that enough warm
air in the lower levels of the atmosphere will lift into areas
near and south of the Ohio River to allow for a wintry mixture of
sleet... freezing rain... rain and snow Monday afternoon and
evening. As colder air builds in from the Great Lakes Monday
night... precipitation is expected to changeover to all snow across
south central Ohio and northern Kentucky. As the low pressure
passes through the Tennessee Valley Tuesday afternoon and
evening... additional mixed precipitation is possible across south
central Ohio and northern Kentucky. Temperatures will remain cold
enough to support snow throughout the event elsewhere.

The potential exists for a significant snowfall of four to eight
inches north of the Ohio River... with significant snow and ice
accumulations possible south of the Ohio River from Monday night
through Tuesday night. The exact amount of snow and ice will
depend on the track of the storm system.

Remember... a Winter Storm Watch means conditions are favorable
for hazardous winter weather in and close to the watch area.

Yep!

We were saying the usual rural districts that release early, delay or close entirely are all having emergency meetings and won't even open on Monday! (Walton Verona, Pendleton County, Switzerland Country, Fayetteville-Perry, etc.). The places my kids would joke they wanted to move to, just to get off school when there's snow!

At least this time I'm off work tomorrow and can grocery shop, buy gas for the snow blower (we're out right now), gas up the cars, etc. Last time I ran out of time.

You watch, area Kroger stores will be slammed tomorrow!

Jeremy - LOL Yes, you are correct kind sir. As you can see I'm still a Kroger shopper.....but I have tried Meijer (love their produce dept., it beats Kroger's by a mile). I'm just so used to Kroger's, you could blindfold me and I'd find my way around its aisles. My husband is already switching cars for Monday since mine is better in the snow. Usually he scoffs at these wx forecasts but since they were right about last week's storm, he's paying attention. Now that's something!

Stay tuned.....and informed, SW Ohio, N Kentucky and SE Indiana folks.

Looking good for you over there....6 inches possible i've read in some places in Ohio....i've also read that warming may come into play tomorrow but shouldn't cool down in time for the main precipitation on Tuesday.

Our snow event in the UK is well and truly over and we are mild and wet again...so i will be webcam watching again this week!

Winter Storm Watch/Northern Ohio

#30 Postby dawgpound » Sun Feb 11, 2007 4:09 pm

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/fin ... =44805#WIN

Statement as of 2:48 PM EST on February 11, 2007

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Tuesday morning through
Wednesday morning...

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Winter
Storm Watch for much of Northern Ohio... which is in effect from
Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.

A significant winter storm system is expected to develop across
the middle Mississippi Valley Monday night... and move into the Ohio
Valley region Tuesday into Tuesday night. As Gulf moisture spreads
into Northern Ohio Tuesday... expect light snow to develop during
the day... and become steadier and heavier by evening. Snow will
continue across the area Tuesday night before ending Wednesday
morning. Due to storm track uncertainty... exact accumulations are
not certain. However... storm total snow accumulations of 8 inches
or greater are possible Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Gusty
northeast winds will also cause some blowing and drifting.

A Winter Storm Watch means that heavy snow is possible. If you
are within the watch area... remain alert to rapidly changing
weather conditions. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service or
the local news media for the latest updates and possible
warnings.

As predicted...massive runs on stores today...I have received reports that lots of snow-removal equipment and groceries are disappearing fast. Florence Bigg's and Wal-Mart both reported to have been extremely busy this afternoon.

Hello Everyone,

It has been awhile since I've been here. This storm looks to be a good one. My husband went to the grocery store for me yesterday. When he came home I asked him how it was. In his words "I went shopping with 200 of my clostest friends. We still have a winter storm watch but I believe they will be changing that after 2pm today. Talking about kids having school off, in my community since the schools are located within walking distance we only had one day off last week. My daughter had school Monday even with the frigid temps and then the superintendent called off Tuesday because she had gotten flack for it. Then we had that great snow Tuesday night (about 5 inches) and the kids had school the next day. How crazy is that. It will be interesting to see what she does with this next storm.

luvwinter - that is too funny! My local Kroger's was mobbed yesterday. Kids everywhere and underfoot, parents harried, trying to not forget anything. I also saw people just backing out of parking spots, not even looking! A few near accidents until someone blasted their horn. I've never seen my Kroger store so crowded and hectic. Since the storm got pushed back, I could have gone again today but I went instead to Target. We needed a new battery operated pump for our air mattress, in case our power goes out and we need to sleep in the basement near our gas FP. Target was crazy too. Similar to xmas but different. People were doing their Valentine's Day shopping but also hitting the grocery aisles heavy. Throwing all sorts of items in their carts.

I heard Dayton will get heavy snowfall. What are they predicting for your are luvwinter?

We expect to have many school closings for Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.

Stay tuned and safe everyone.

Florence hard hit...

We had about half an inch of ice here on Tuesday...numerous power outages including at my sister's home on the west side of the city. Still a few tree limbs falling. One hit our fence in the backyard. This afternoon it is snowing which is not good for the trees because it will add weight to them.

Received between 13 and 16 inches of snow in our area. Level 2 and 3 snow emergencies declared. Schools are still closed because of road conditions and cold. Possum Run Road in Richland County, Ohio was -15 degrees this morning.

Cold weather is doing more harm than good for those who a) have no power and b) those who are out there working in this. Crews have called it a night, and with temperatures expected to be near or below zero tonight, no one can blame them...frostbite would be a big issue. However thousands still are in the dark down here and it's expected to be Friday night before they come back on...and another wintry blast is expected Saturday...

It was a tricky one for me to follow from over here. The Noaa website seemed to be down for most of the day...not many webcams were working across Ohio.

A friend of ours who lives in Gahanna, Columbus, (she's from Scotland!) called and said that there was 6 inches of snow on the ground with a crunchy layer of ice on top.

From the reports i got, Cincinnati was affected by rain at points in the afternoon, Columbus had several hours of freezing rain and the counties north of Columbus saw the most snow. The official report from Columus airport indicates that 4 inches of snow fell.

I've picked up the clipper for Saturday, not much in it for Columbus but Cincinnati might do quite well?

All sounds better than here which is just soping wet after the snowmelt last weekend and heavy rain this week! Raining heavily again today, and looks set in for the day.

I'm heading for Columbus tomorrow morning and returning on Monday. Does anyone have any indication of the weather for that time period?

Columbus will see some snow on Saturday. Otherwise, you should be fine weatherwise. Roads, however, could be a different story both Saturday night and Sunday night.

Just had a snow advisory issued by the National Weather Service...2-3 inches for Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Heaviest amounts will be south of Cincinnati.
