I was attempting a skiing trip to Applachian Ski Mtn. one winter when I lived in Hickory, NC during an artic outbreak, believe it was 82 or 83. The temp. there when we got out of the car was -28F with wind chills -40 to -60F. That trip got immediately cancelled!! Your breathe froze the full face ski mask to your face with the moisture in it. Too miserable to attempt skiing.
Was in Cleveland, TN during the Superstorm of March 13, 1993. We had 10-15 ft. drifts with 28" of snow and Thundersnow, winds gusting to 60mph, temp was 10F with wind chills down to near -50F. My Chow would normally bolt out an open door, I couldn't get him to go out dangling a Ribeye Steak in front of him!! LOL!!

3 consecutive days back in 1978 (mid-January). Two were -25 and the third was -24. One of those three days, the high didn't even go above 0 - which is unheard of for Cincinnati. But that was back when we thought the next ice age was coming. LOL I was working in a medical office with linoleum floors and with the thermostat kept very low (65). I don't know how I survived but I worked all 3 days. Probably 65 felt like a heat wave compared to those temps! Of course after I got to work, it began to warm up. One of those days, my car barely started and I never got heat - the entire way to work, I could see my breath inside my car (second Honda Civic generation, a tiny thing, with exposed alum. inside).
That's my story!

I think it was 7 degrees on Christmas morning '83. I remember my Dad had a very frustrating Christmas that year: a pipe burst in the garage and the garage floor became an ice rink (but we don't have a clue how to ice skate, so it was wasted on us!). Also, my older brothers and cousins kept the beer out on the deck, no need for an ice chest!

I recall going cross country skiing out behind where I lived, when it was -40 or colder. When there was no wind everthing was so still and quiet. Often when we crossed into the valley we would see deer. The cold day We have had a wind chill of -48 C this winter. I can recall colder, but in the 60s no one talked about wind chill.

January 1984 at Dugway UT. When I came up to the gate to the work area we had diamond dust in the air and the nearby automated site was registering -33F as I rolled down the car window to show my ID. A short time later at the weather station, I had to take the first ob of the morning since the observer was late (he had a hard time starting his car). It was -26F and I had to use a sling psychrometer to get the DP-Ouch that was cold! We had three days in a row of -20F or lower readings and the -26F was then a new all time record for Dugway. Two years later I was in Sierra Vista AZ. Still gets nippy here as the lowest ever at the house is +11F so far.

Hawley Lake recorded Arizona's coldest temperature of 40° below zero on January 7, 1971.
Hawley Lake is 12 miles east of here...it was -31F here in town.
I was stationed in Adak Alaska from 1976 till 1977, sustained winds of 37 MPH are norm, gusts to over 70 MPH are the norm....daytime temps, 30F....made for ONE miserable year of my LIFE

This is why Adak Alaska is called the "Birthplace of the Winds!"
seriously, Google "Birthplace of the Winds" and you'll find Adak!

Camping is possible without a permit on Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge lands, but camping is generally not recommended due to the harsh climate. The wind on Adak is highly variable and often unpredictable. Gusts can exceed 100 knots or more (the record speed is unknown because the wind ripped the ananometer off of the tower). During the calmer summer months, sustained wind speeds average in the low double digits gusting to 50 knots or more.

Anyway, the title of the board is winter weather. Should I be be posting of hot weather instead? I was recently in Panama City, but I thought not to post the temps here on the winter board.
