FROZEN MIX IN SE VA!!!

#1 Postby george_r_1961 » Sun Jan 21, 2007 2:28 pm

Got a mix of rain, sleet, and snow here in Hampton now. With the temp at 34 degrees not sure how long this will last but its the first wintry precip we have had here this year. Being a Sunday there shouldnt be a lot of traffic out there so hopefully no demolition derby on the roads

Forecast low is 35. Its 32 now. Although temps should begin to rise later I think we will see a little more sleet before it changes to rain.

Here in central VA (Charlottesville), the Weather Channel has said it has been snowing all day. However, its mostly been sleet and rain (I guess that would make freezing rain since it is 25 degrees outside). Unfortunate.

I am in the Millers Creek area in the foothills of N.C. under an ice warning and we only had sleet and freezing rain for a total of 1 hour this morning around 9 a.m. Every since then it has been all rain. I called NOAA in Blacksburg and let them know that our area has only been getting rain. The temperature is still 33 outside and only the ends of branches are starting to freeze towards the top of the trees. The Nexrad radar even showed we were in a mixture all day long and we have only have gotten plain cold rain. The man I spoke to in Blacksburg said we are under a ice storm warning because of the more elevated areas in our county such as the blue ridge mountains but they are reporting only rain as well. He even found it hard to believe we were not getting sleet and freezing rain. I said nope only puddles. In a real ice storm our porch and trash can and cars are covered in ice. I dont think we should have any problems with power outages because the winds are only expected overnight to be 5-10 mph. We should not be in a ice storm warning but......WHATEVER that is Blacksburg for ya. If you wanna see a real ice storm warning ask the folks in Texas not here in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. You wanna know how off NOAA was on our low temperature for this morning? Our low was supposed to be 26 and our actual low was 33.1. with most areas around us 34 and never got below freezing. You wanna know whats funny though when NOAA predicts 20% chance of flurries and no accumilation of wintery precipitation we usually get a dusting to 3 inches. As you can tell we dont have a decent weather forecaster in this neck of the woods. They dont know S##t. How can you get put under an ice storm warning when the temperature never gets to freezing or below.

I don't know about all that, but it is 32.9 here and it is still rain. They have taken the low from 39 down to 32, imagine that. Looks as if freezing rain adv may be extended to other counties.
