Media attention/relief work ice storm

#1 Postby conestogo_flood » Fri Jan 19, 2007 4:38 pm

I decided to take a look at some photos of the ice storm in Missouri, and I was shocked.

So much damage done, so many people without power, national guard in, federal disaster areas, schools closed, people cant get to work, no gas, no running water... it all makes me ask...

Only 6 days in why isn't there any media attention or noticable relief work being done? This is the first time I heard how severe it was, I just thought some ice accumulated, people sat around fires to warm up and out it went. Day 6, and Springfield looks like a bomb went off.

Does anyone else feel this way, or am I over blowing the situation. I haven't seen a CNN story on this since probably the day it happened, besides the odd mention during the weather forecasts.

With weather fresh in everyones mind continent wide...

(Believe you me, I have CNN on while I am home during the day, I'm not in school.)

It hasn't received the attention I feel it deserves but then again the media has an East Coast bias. Believe me though... the amount of relief efforts that are underway are massive and are coming from across the country. By the way, an organization (I believe the Red Cross) has levels of disaster. Katrina was a 5. This ice storm was a 4. I am not comparing this to Katrina...there is no way to do that, but I am saying that this is really bad. If this happened east of the Appalachians it would be big news for days on end!

There is little coverage, if any, because there are no dramatic pictures of people on rooftops, water rescues, celebrities going into rivers to rescue poor lost souls. In other words, it is not a 'sexy' story to the media. Plus, there are not local officials holding press conferences daily loudly blaming the president, FEMA, the National Guard, or any one else for this tragedy.

It doesn't mean it isn't a catastrophe it is. It just isn't an interesting one to the main stream media.

We've been seeing reports on it around here daily via the local news channels like FOX and NBC.

They need to get more help out there to get the power on for everyone as soon as possible.
