Hey Yankee - surprised to see you up so early. I was supposed to go to bro's out in Katy today, and don't think that's gonna pan out again. <sigh> Looks like a lot more moisture zooming right up 59 to Houston the next few hours. So far, ice on the trees here but not too bad.... yet. Don't like the looks of the radar.

The ice is pretty bad here... the back deck is an ice rink! would it be mean to put the dogs out?? they might slip and slide on the deck! Stupid fox news says the ice warning is till 9 am, but the nws says noon! whats up with that? I just sent her an e mail!! and I know I am up early, had to see if the kids had school, which they dont... lol... Frank is still at work and I havent heard from him yet... dont know if he is able to make it home from the IAH area!!

These are the things I find the strangest right now from the TV reports...
-Why some of the on air mets keep saying we are not seeing any real accumulations. (have they not been outside? I have a good 0.20" here).
-Why the on air mets all seem to think downtown Houston will rise to 38-degrees today even with the precipitation expected to continue over the area (with low dewpoints) and the NWS only shows the city rising to 35.
Really, at the moment, I would be surprised if places from Katy to Spring northwestward get much above 32 today (may be only briefly hitting 33-34..if even) and even in the city I think low to mid 30s look to be a good bet. I also think that same Katy to Spring northwestward area should probably be under the same ice storm warning that waller and montgomery counties are. Our temps. here are not much different than in those counties, yet they are under an Ice storm warning until 11am tomorrow morning and we are only under one until noon today. Does that make any sense? It is not like the freezing rain will just decide to stop at the county border. lol.

rain starting up here again too. I am at 30.2F right now as well...which means this will all once again freeze.

Well this is unfolding into a really big mess up here. Seems NOBODY was prepared for this. None of the roads are treated because NWS was apparently expecting the edge of the precip to stay about 50 miles south of here last night. I guess that since we have such an impressive track record of predicting the exact locations and natures of North Texas weather systems 12-24 hours in advance, nobody bothered to call up the salt-and-sand guys.... 
Accidents already popping up everywhere, schools cancelled...I have work in a few hours.

My parents and sister live in west texas, Lubbock and Muleshoe and they said this morning by the weekend they are expecting 6-12 inches of snow. So this is what winter is like
living in DFW, we have a few days of cold then the rest is mild.

Big problems across Harris County this morning with glazing of bridges and overpasses. Numerous accidents all over the place this morning.
Major problems with icing on US 290, I-10, S 610 Loop, and I-45
Sanding operation are in progress however bridges are glazing faster than sand trucks can sand.
Avoid travel across the area and use extreme caution at bridges and overpasses...reduce speed to less than 10mph while crossing bridges and overpasses.
Ice Storm Warning extended until noon for Harris, Fort Bend, Liberty, Wharton, Jackson, and Matagorda counties
Ice Storm Warning extended until 1100am THURSDAY for All areas N and W of Harris County.
The major Ice Conditions:
US 290 @ W Little York: bridge closed
US 290 from Beltway 8 to Waller county---all bridges sanded
I-45 at Woodlands Pkwy--closed due to ice
Beltway 8 and SH 249--bridges closed due to ice
I-10 at Gessner and Pin Oak--bridges iced with sanding in progress
US 59 @ Beltway 8--ramps closed with heavy icing--sanded multiple times
610 S Loop---ice on multiple bridges--closed both ways at I-45.
I-45 at Lockwood and Spur 5---heavy icing with 7-10 car pileup--Sanding operations in progress.
Beltway 8 @ US 290---bridge is iced over---has been sanded multiple times.
Discussion:
Freezing rain continues over SE TX north of a line from Winnie to Pasadena to Pearland to Bay City to Port Lavaca. Ice accumulations of 1/10 to 1/4 of an inch have occurred overnight over Harris County resulting in very hazardous travel conditions. Bands of freezing rain and sleet will continue through at least 1000am over Harris and Fort Bend counties and through early afternoon to the N and W of those counties.
Should finally see temps. rise above freezing across Harris and Fort Bend counties by 1000am and not return below freezing tonight ending the threat of freezing precip. N and W counties will not be as lucky as temps. will remain nearly steady around freezing through Thursday midday resulting in continued icing. Ice accumulations are significant from Waller and Montgomery counties N and W and failures of power lines and tree limbs is starting to be reported...power lines down in and around Splendora.
Elsewhere:
Widespread winter storm impacting nearly the entire state. Ice and snow continues in Austin and San Antonio and moderate to heavy snow is falling in Dallas this morning. Nearly all major interstates are ice covered across the state and travel is extremely dangerous.
Extended:
Messy weather continues as large arctic high slowly gives ground and deep SW flow aloft continues to supply moisture over the top of the cold air mass. Looks like we will see another strong frontal passage Friday with an increase in overrunning this weekend. Cold air advection does not look as impressive with this arctic surge and freezing temps. should be confined to our north...however there is some indication that freezing temps. may reach our northern counties over the weekend and once again P-type could become an issue....however will leave everything liquid for now and focus and current Winter Storm in progress.
Will keep temps. below 50 degrees through Sunday for highs as clouds and rains prevent rapid air mass modification.
