Cold fronts slow down but isn' t this an Arctic front? Blue Northerners don't slow down for nothing right? I don't think this one will slow down when night comes and take a break it has too much momentum. Hey it might just beat the rain then what?

You know, this one (front) is starting to remind me of an arctic outbreak in December 1990. I remember the weather in Austin being showery and in the 70s that morning ... and by 11 p.m. that night, we had sub freezing temperatures and snow flurries falling.

Yeah, it was 1990 because I just got married and my wife on that day drove from Austin to Del Rio and back and talked about how the bridges in San Antonio were iced over. I want to say it was pretty close to Christmas as well. I was a nervous wreck until she got back!

I remember 1989 and the single digit lows. Talk about historic . . .

Just checked the Corpus climate records and yes their was a cold spell right around Christmas of that year too. Not nearly as bad as 89. Not even close.

If it beats the rain then we start out dry. However, if the reinforcing shots of cold come in as expected and the precip shows up then we may have a situation where the cold air is deep enought for the frizen precip to be snow instead of ice. Not seeing that happen yet, but your scenario could set up something like that.

For that area of Kansas, try this site -- updates every 5min or so.

Things should start ramping up fairly quickly from forecasters and TV. What remains to be seen is how far into Texas this event becomes.

OKC just issued, yes, a ice warning extending into portions of Texas.
