White Christmas?

I know that this is the 14-15 day GFS and that it usually is inaccurate at these long ranges, but for the past 2-3 days it has been showing this arctic blast of cold air along with an apparent Nor'easter developing. It also shows another arctic blast right behind this one. Hopefully this will verify as I would love to see a white Christmas. Anybody think this might happen? Here is the latest run.

We had a White Christmas here in 2004, so I'll doubt it will happen again for a long time.

Actually, I'm not sure if what we had constituted as a White Christmas. It didn't snow or sleet on Christas, but on December 22 and on Christmas we still had a solid 2-3 inches of snow and ice on everything.

I also had a white Christmas for 2004. It started snowing shortly after noon on Christmas Day and snowed off and on all day long. We had a little over an inch of accumalation. It would be almost a miracle if the same thing happened exactly 2 years later. Last Christmas was so mild here that it was shorts weather. But, I remember clearly February 1988 it snowed here and again on December 1989. So, that was 2 winters in a row here. I was a child back then but I remember it clearly like it was yesterday.

We had snow here as well in 2004 but be forewarned................................My 99 year old dear Grandmother told me then that for our area snow always preceeds a bad hurricane. She passed away the following August, 1 day before her 100th Birthday. Low and behold she was right now wasn't she. Who would have guessed a Katrina and Rita would be our reward for that terrific Christmas suprise called snow this far south. I absolutely love snow but if that's the price for a white Christmas then I think I'll pass. These grand old Cajuns have alot of folklore that always seem to be correct when we least want them to.

Yep, last Christmas was certainly "shorts" weather but looking back, it was a blessing for those of us who still have no roofs on our homes.

Jagno, the funny thing with the Christmas snow of 2004...Lafayette parish barely got any snow. A few flurries and no accumulation. We didn't get anything from Katrina and just a little bit of Rita. I have to believe that cajun folklore.

Someone forgot to tell Miss Rita that we basically only got flurries that Christmas Eve (no real accumulation). Meanwhile, Galveston and many areas to my west and southwest (and well off to the east as well) got buried in snow.

Maybe that folklore doesn't work for Texans...just bring on the snow. I only got to make about a dime-sized snowball in 2004, and that took me a while. lol

For those of you that saw flurries and a trace of accumulaton, count your blessings. I stood outside ALL DAY here in Conre praying for some snow. I didn't even see a flake during that record snow back in 2004. 18 to 20 miles off to the south of me, snow was accumulating. I couldn't even go check it out because I was getting ready for a christmas eve party!!!

This year, if a good honest snowfall is forecasted within a 3 to 5 hour drive of my house, my family and I are taking a road trip.

New Orleans experiences snowfall only on rare occasions. Most recently, a small amount of snow fell on Christmas in 2004, during the 2004 Christmas Eve Snowstorm. On December 25, a combination of rain, sleet, and snow fell on the city, leaving some bridges icy. Before that, the last white Christmas was in 1954, and brought 4.5 inches (110 mm). The last significant snowfall in New Orleans fell on December 22, 1989, when most of the city received 1 or 2 inches of snow.

Never that I can recall, although my memory may be limited. I have no idea how that idea caught on. I remember New Orleans got snow right before Christmas in 1989, and there was no bad hurricane the following year. Same with 1973, and I am sure there are others.

Even so, much as I loved the White Christmas of 2004, I would prefer not to have that this year, since I will be traveling across the Causeway to see my family, and snow would complicate that for sure. Cold weather would be nice though.

We had snow (significant amount) in 1973 too here on the MS Gulf Coast and did not have a hurricane until 1979, which was Frederic.
