Yep Tracker, we're under freeze warning too...even in New Orleans. Hard freeze on the "north shore" and light freeze in the city. Where I am I'm expecting somewhere in the middle, I'm thinking upper 20s. Still very collld!

The snow and ice we saw last Thursday was only the second time I have seen winter type precip in November (1st being Thanksgiving of 93").
November ended up (57.3) +2.0 above the monthly normal 55.3 degrees, and December is currently (39.5) -10.2 below the monthly norm. While December has just started it is still expected to be below normal on average temp wise with above average precip. As with the last arctic plunge I expect another around Christmas and again the chances of precip will depend on timing and track of upper low system.

EXCELLENT RADIATIONAL COOLING CONDITIONS TONIGHT. DECOUPLING WINDS
JUST AFTER SUNSET COMBINED WITH CLEAR SKIES/SFC HIGH SETTLING ATOP
THE REGION/LOW DEWPOINTS SHOULD MAKE FOR SOME COLD TEMPS OVERNIGHT.
A COUPLE OF RECORD LOW ARE IN DANGER OF BEING BROKEN (CLL/IAH..SEE
BELOW FOR THE ACTUAL NUMBERS). THE ONLY BUGABOO COULD BE THE CLOUD
(MOSTLY MID/HIGH) DECK MOVING IN FROM THE W/SW. OTHERWISE THE REST
OF THE FCST LOOKS TO STAY ON THE QUIET/DRY SIDE. ONSHORE WINDS SET
TO RETURN AREAWIDE LATE TOMORROW AS THE HIGH SHIFTS EASTWARD. LOW-
LEVEL MOISTURE TO START INCREASING WED OVER SE TX...POOLING MAINLY
OVER THE SRN HALF OF THE FA WED NIGHT AHEAD OF THE NEXT FRONT THAT
IS STILL ON TRACK FOR PASSAGE INTO THE COASTAL WATERS BY THU MORN-
ING. AS IT HAS BEEN THESE LAST FEW RUNS...MODELS NOT TERRIBLY GUNG
HO ON THE IDEA OF WIDESPREAD PCPN WITH FROPA. AVAILABLE MOISTURE A
TAD LOW AND CONVERGENCE ALONG THE BOUNDARY NOT THAT IMPRESSIVE. SO
BARRING ANY ROGUE S/WVS EMBEDDED WITHIN THE INCREASINGLY ZONAL UP-
PER FLOW...WILL KEEP WITH THE LOWISH POPS ALREADY IN THE GRIDS. A-
NOTHER DECENT COOLDOWN IN THE POST FRONTAL ENVIRONS WITH THE UPPER
LOW SITUATED OVER THE GREAT LAKES AND THE RIDGE OVER THE ROCKIES.
THIS PATTERN TO CREATE A NICE PATH FOR CANADIAN AIR MOVING SWD TO-
WARD THE STATE. SOME DIFFERENCES NOTED IN THE EXTENDED GUIDANCE AS
THE GFS-LR TRIES TO DEVELOP A CLOSED LOW OVER THE CALI BAJA BEFORE
TRACKING IT EAST ACROSS NRN MEXICO. THIS FEATURE DOES SEEM TO HAVE
AN IMPACT ON THE RIDGE THAT SHOULD BE BUILDING ALOFT OVER THE CNTL
PLAINS IN THE WAKE OF THE STRONG TROF MOVING OFF THE NERN US COAST.
ON THE OTHER HAND...THE ECMWF DOES NOT APPEAR TO FEATURE THIS FEA-
TURE AT ALL. SO WILL OPT TO HEDGE ON THIS PORTION OF THE FCST JUST
A LITTLE LONGER. 41
RECORD LOW FOR TUE (12/5)

The crazy thing is it may even be colder than that. The NWS is probably just waiting to see if those high clouds will have an impact before going too low.jschlitz wrote:For my zone from NWS:

Ouch. That would be my coldest reading since we moved here in '05. I hope those clouds can roll-in or something.
Over in Beaumont they have a low forecast of 26-27F.

What plants are you dreading losing from this? From our freezing rain/sleet/snow and freezing temps last week, we lost our canna lillies and basil. I cut them back this past weekend.

Hopefully I won't actually lose anything at 29F - other than finishing off my bananas and canna lillies. The cutoff for my Majesty Palms, Citrus, and Pygmy Date is 28F before I worry about real damage - so I am borderline before wrapping them up.
My hibiscus are still alive but I plan to replace them anyway this spring.
Also - yes it will prob. be colder towards Beaumont. Lows get colder off to the east.

This weather is reminiscent more of January than early December. I have been cold all day long, and very grateful for the stack of firewood (dwindling already) we got a couple weeks ago. Fire, fire, FIRE!!

I now have a reading of 35F at 7:40pm. Brrr...
Also..more bad news..
The new forecast low for my area is...26/27F! Also, Conroe is now forecast to hit 24F, and the Woodlands to hit 26F! This will be the coldest night in a long time for sure. Even IAH should be in the 20s.

SETTING UP FOR THE COLDEST NIGHT OF THE SEASON SO FAR ACROSS MOST
OF SE TX. SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS 1034 MB HIGH CENTERED RIGHT OVER
SE TX THIS EVENING. TEMPS ARE DROPPING QUICKLY WITH VERY DRY
AIRMASS (DEWPOINTS UPPER TEENS/LOWER 20S) AND DECOUPLING WINDS.
MANY LOCATIONS IN OUR NRN ZONES ARE ALREADY IN THE MID 30S. HAVE
DECIDED TO LOWER MINS OVER MOST OF THE AREA TONIGHT...WITH LOWER
TO MID 20S OVER THE NORTHERN HALF AND UPPER 20S TO AROUND 30
ELSEWHERE. EVERYONE CAN EXPECT FREEZING TEMPS EXCEPT THE IMMEDIATE
COAST WHICH WILL ONLY DROP TO AROUND 40. WILL UPDATE HWOHGX AND
ISSUE SPS ABOUT THE FREEZING TEMPS. IR IMAGERY SHOWS SCATTERED
HIGH CLOUDS STREAMING IN FROM THE WEST...BUT THINK CLOUD COVER
WILL REMAIN THIN ENOUGH TO HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON TEMPS.

THIS INCLUDES THE OUTLYING SUBURBS OF HOUSTON. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN BELOW FREEZING FOR 6 TO 8 HOURS IN THESE AREAS. READINGS WILL BOTTOM OUT BETWEEN 25 AND 30 DEGREES.
