Blizzard. You get tropical systems all the time.

I wish I could remember more from the one in 1993... *sigh*

Having lived in both, although from South Florida and lived in Chicago for only 3 years; I MUCH prefer a blizzard to a Tropical System.

Afterwards, it's kind of pretty and there is no real damage to clean up.

Having lived in North Carolina for 9 years; an ICE STORM is the not fun Winter event. It literally looked like a Hurricane hit in Charlotte after a particularly nasty ice storm. Trees down everywhere, roads blocked, power out for days; all the joys of the aftermath of a hurricane plus cold temps instead of steamy hot ones (unless of course you consider Wilma where we were pretty cold afterwards)

Well no significant snow yet (there's a tad mixed in).. but there's a nice layer of tiny ice balls.. really compact and it's melted together to make a nice solid sheet of pebbly ice. Honestly.. I wouldn't drive on it... hubby on the other hand has to drive home on it in an hour. Not a happy camper. Snow I can deal with.. ice is a different story... it's midnight.. will check back in later...

P.S. grew up in chicago.. lived in nc for 2 years.. i'd also take a blizzard over a tropical storm. Honestly the death rate is probably about the same if not slightly higher for a blizzard here (because of accidents and people drive in blizzards.) Most people take tropical storms a little more seriously and stay off the roads more. I mean i see people willing to drive when a blizzard is going on that wouldn't during a TS. Not sure which is more expensive to deal with now that I think about it ...

Hurricanes are a whole different story though..definately more costly

We have relatives in Barrington, west of Chicago. My sister-in-law says they rarely get a snowday. Sometimes a delay but it's usually business as usual in Chicago. She's a teachers aide so she enjoys getting off school. I'm still waiting to hear from her. Since I haven't, she's probably already on her way to work.

Well there were extensive closing in NW IL but not here in New Lenox much to the disappointment of the kiddies. Actually was surprised by the lack of snow upon waking up this morning.

Seems the temps came back up just enough after our icing last night to melt that and turn it to slush which is probably a good thing! Now we have a pretty good clip of snow coming down. If that ice hadn't of melted all the maple trees (and there's many!) up and down the block would be probably losing branches.

I'd say we have about 3 inches on the ground now. But it is very wet and heavy snow. Took the kiddo to the bus stop ... was outside for 10 minutes and came back inside with dripping hair! So while it isn't deep it's so slushy and wet it is making driving downright miserable. 10-20 miles is making a big difference with snowfall totals around here.

P.S. on a side note... the tree's look rather pretty. Why is it the first snowfalls of the seaon are always the most beautiful? By spring I'll not be able to wait for it to just be GONE!

P.S.S. Miss Mary if you go to http://www.emergencyclosings.com you can see if her school district is closed :P Looks like her district is indeed closed :)

Looks like my old stomping grounds in north central Illinois (Boone County) got a good dose of around 8-10". Watched it via web cam in DeKalb and Rockford.

Could almost feel those big flakes hit my face....all the way down here in the desert Southwest!

Pebbles - yes she was off work, her son off school. She said road conditions are terrible since it not only heavy snowfall but sleet and ice mixed in. It's rare to have a snowday and especially on a Friday. They are trimming their xmas tree as I type this and staying in. Smart idea! I must admit I wish I was there.......
