I don't think the moisture streaming in from the Pacific was expected. We will see what happens but the clearing skies may not come into frutition tonight.

Maybe that will help keep temps up. We should have at least a period of clearing skies though. I can see it plain as day to my west towards Katy. Maybe not IN Katy - but at least in that direction. I can see the Westchase District and Energy Corridor buildings from my office - and on the western horizon the sky is bright orange with clearing skies.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
358 PM CST THU NOV 30 2006
.DISCUSSION...
THE STRONG COLD FRONT THAT MOVED ACROSS SE TX HAS PUSHED WELL
OFFSHORE THIS AFTERNOON. THE MAIN FORECAST ITEMS OF CONCERN ARE
THE WINDS FOR THIS EVENING AND THE OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES OVER
THE NEXT FEW NIGHTS.
THE UPPER LOW WAS EXITING NORTHEAST ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PLAINS
THIS AFTERNOON. VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGES SINCE NOON HAS SHOWN
CLEARING SKIES DEVELOPING OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN AREAS. THE MODEL
GUIDANCE ALSO INDICATES THAT THE STRONG COLD AIR ADVECTION WILL
DIMINISH OVERNIGHT. AM EXPECTING THE WIND SPEEDS TO DIMINISH BELOW
WIND ADVISORY CRITERIA BY THE LATE EVENING AT THE COAST AND AROUND
5 TO 10 MPH OVER MOST INLAND LOCATIONS BY LATE TONIGHT. THE
SOUTHWESTERN COUNTIES WILL PROBABLY SEE THE FIRST FREEZING
TEMPERATURES OF THE SEASON AND ISSUED A FREEZE WARNING FOR THOSE
LOCATIONS. OVER MOST INLAND LOCATIONS TEMPERATURES WILL DROP TO
NEAR OR BELOW FREEZING SOMETIME BETWEEN 3 AND 6 AM WITH THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURES LIKELY AROUND AND SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE.
THE MODEL GUIDANCE THEN DEPARTS FROM WHAT IS NEXT EXPECTED IN
BRINGING ABOUT A SLIGHT WARMING TREND FRIDAY NIGHT. WITH THE
SURFACE HIGH LOCATED OVERHEAD...AM EXPECTING ANOTHER NIGHT OF
TEMPERATURES CLOSE TO THOSE OF TONIGHT. NORTHEASTERLY WINDS
DEVELOP AS THE RIDGE SHIFTS A BIT TO THE NORTH ON SATURDAY.
ANOTHER HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE WILL THEN BUILD IN FROM THE NORTH FOR
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHTS. ONSHORE WINDS ARE THEN FORECAST BY THE
MODELS TO DEVELOP LATE TUESDAY OR EARLY WEDNESDAY.

Looks like it's drying out to the west of Houston, so the slight chance we had of sleet is pretty much gone. Surprised NWS didn't lower the lows a bit with the expected clearing, but I suppose it will be a little too windy. Anyway, a 3 hour plus freeze is in the works tonight (more up north), so I would consider this our first hard freeze of the season (pretty cool for Dec. 1st)

the winds right now deserve a wind advisory IMO. They are about as bad here right now as they were back a couple a weeks ago. I just watched as a what had to be 45-50mph+ wind gust lifted a piece of metal lawn furniture into the air, spun it around, and then sent it slamming into the ground. Pretty crazy right now with sudden high gusts!
Also, on Galveston island they are supposedly seeing near TS force sustained winds with gusts to 40-50mph (according to ABC13 news).

This was one of the most impressive winter fronts I've seen for the following reasons:
Record highs prior to the event, modifying some of the cold air
Lack of snowpack to the north
Still just late Novemver
Despite these 3 obstacles, this front really delivered. Would have been a different ballgame in the peak of winter.

yeah, can you imagine? A front like this in January could have easily been 10-20 degrees colder.Furious George wrote:This was one of the most impressive winter fronts I've seen for the following reasons:

We're in a wind advisory over here. I was outside in it a little while ago and the very cold, windy air was making it hard to breathe. That strong, cold wind....keep your mouth closed or it will kinda suffocate ya. lol
Rain in the mid-30's....oh so close! grrr
Too bad the wind chill factor can't fool the rain into thinking it's below freezing.

Ah I think i love my life
first time seeing snow and im quite impressed
its been sprinkling since about 10 this morning then it started changing to sleet/freezing rain then snow around 11 or 12
its been snowing *kinda hard too* from about 1 to 3...and its 5 now and it started back up again kinda hard. I can see the blue sky now, but its still coming down at a good pace.
On the horizon is more clouds tho, but im not sure how much more snow/sleet or any kind of precip we will get tonight. Nice to see actual snow tho...it made my year

Actually, I just walked outside work again, I see mostly cloudy skies now with a lot of blue, and can see the moon over head.
I think its done. Was pretty cool to see it, even if it wasn't much.
I wish the center of the low had passed south of us. Could have gotten the heavy snow they are getting in Oklahoma.
