Midwest Winter Weather Thread - Arctic Air Has Arrived

I plan to follow Ohio winter weather closely this season....looks like the the first real arctic blast is moving in towards the end of this week.....

Wednesday Night: A chance of showers, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday: Showers likely, mainly after 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Thursday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 33. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday: Snow or rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

The east needs to catch up with the west in the snow cover department. The west is getting an early hit! Should make up for it in a big way later on.. Question, isnt the east usually getting at least chilly by this time of year??... its really mild out east right now in my opinion.. doesnt count for much lol.. the coldest night in that forcast is barely below freezing. What needs to happen to let the cold air mass down and towards the east?

Looks like the cold will hit the midwest in a big way though starting Friday. Lows don't get out of the 20s for at least 10 days with highs in the 30s and low 40s...

Keep in mind temps across the Ohio River valley have been some 20+ degrees above normal.......there is only about 48 more hours of this warmth and it probably won't return for about 4-5 months (last I think you will see 60s)

Those lows for Columbus are about what we are expecting for lows in about another day or two.

Be prepared.... I live in the metro KC area. We had temps around 70 yesterday. Right now we are in the midst of an ice storm. Then 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast tomorrow night.

I'm not quite sure I understand. The weather in Columbus is bad in the winter. Snow/sleet/ice and temps that stay freezing for months. So you like this type of weather?

I live in Northwest ohio closer to Indiana and I really hope for some good snow so I dont have shcool on friday and can work on my Gingerbread house for my German Class. Danke Schone. Das Wetter ist sehr Gut. hope I spelled my Deutsch right.

I don't think school will be canceled this time...but it is basically going to early fall to winter in 24 hours starting tomorrow night for much of the Midwest.

I'm north of most of it, so it will be interesting to see what happens all the way up on the north side of Lake Huron...it is 60 out here now, supposed to tumble into the 20s tomorrow...but not a lot of snow expected here.

Typically the Cincinnati area does not receive measurable snowfall that can stick and cause accidents/school closings until early January. Now 2 years ago the Midwest and Ohio Valley got slammed with that freak Dec. 23 snowstorm so it can happen but with temps as high as they've been lately, the ground is too warm for the snow to cause any traffic problems.

However this arctic blast will be a shock. Everyone's talking about. Time for our furnace to kick on again (we keep our therm. set on 65, so it's hardly come on lately), drop the blinds at night, use door draft stoppers, break out sweaters, slippers, etc. I even managed to cut my grass for hopefully the final time yesterday. Unreal for late November! I even have weeds trying to come back. Sure seemed odd for Novemeber.

So I for one am ready for Winter to start. Big-time! But there will be people grumbling.......a lot of folks.

I'm not quite sure I understand. The weather in Columbus is bad in the winter. Snow/sleet/ice and temps that stay freezing for months. So you like this type of weather?

I like winter weather yes... i come from a country where decent winter weather does not exist anymore...i only like it from a weather enthusiasts point of view...i admit its a pain for everyday life.

Put it like this, the last widepsread snow event to hit the UK was in 1995. London went without lying snow from 1991 to 2003. We rarely get days that stay below freezing all day. Snow tends to stick for no longer than 2 days here in England..and i reckon on average most parts of England get 2-3 days of lying snow per winter (much higher for the northern hilly parts of course)...so on that basis....i was very curious about what experiences i would find in Ohio duirng the winter when i went out there. The first winter reminded me of my childhood in the 80's growing up in England when we did get harsh winters here (and that winter in Ohio wasn't even classed as a harsh one by people who live there!). The 2nd winter in Ohio reminded me of a British winter this decade...it was not very winter like at all!

And right now..this day after day of gale force winds, heavy rain and very mild temperatures we've been getting in England is getting tiresome and i'm ready for something different!

I just got back from Sioux Falls, SD yesterday and can verify it's coming! Freezing Rain one night/day and the next night brought very bright tunderbolts at 4AM with the temps barely above freezing.. Yesterday morning skies cleared and its was near zero windchill with temps below zero out west a few miles. Pretty wild weather alright. Nice change from boring SW Florida weather.
