Texas winter weather thread #2 - winter weather on Friday?

It's still snowing where I am.

Driving to work this morning was interesting. Was traveling north on I-45 towards northern houston when I passed the front. Traveling at 50 mph north while the front was heading south, my car thermometer reading was literally dropping a degree about every 3-5 seconds. From 70 deg to 47 in minutes.

Skies are starting to clear rapidly to my west (Fredericksburg). I also noticed that dewpoints are dropping fast too, it looks like any chance of frozen stuff is about over for the Hill country.

I hope the Houston area can squeeze a couple of sleet pellets out of this to make EWG's day

Interesting looking radar right now.

I am not getting any/sleet or ice where I am right now...just some cold rain...but it is interesting to see the pinks and blues nearby.

The funniest thing is that San Angelo is reporting light snow after reporting fair skies a couple of hours ago. This has been a strange day

yeah, it looks like some flurries/light snow are developing out that way and are headed east. You guys might still have one last shot at winter precip. later today.

I would take those Precip Type radar images with a grain of salt FOR SURE. They use algorithms derived from Model Data sampling of the atmosphere at different heights. They tend to have a much harder time in the south with shallow airmasses and icing/sleet/mixture types of events. I have also seen in some other forums online that Intellicast's algorithms tend to be more accurate than AccuWx's. I'd bet $$ that the snow showing-up at Lake Livingston is NOT for real - at least not at the surface.

Looks like College station has leveled out at 35F. Would expect Houston to level out at 37-38 througout the rest of the day (like NWS forecast). But if the skies clear out earlier better than expected, I'm wondering if IAH may break 30F tonight.

I have no idea how cold it is under the BC Dome now, but I have my fireplace sparked up and dogs and I are loving every minute of it. Even got a solid rain shower come through a little while ago, and with the screaming wind, think I need to break out the hot chocolate and Rumpleminz. <heading to kitchen>

Dallas Fort Worth update... 1:00 oclock Fort worth is at 28 degrees with moderate snow falling and Dallas is 30 degrees with freezing rain/snow.. its going to be a complete mess at rush hour. its been a steady mix of snow sleet and freezing rain in west Dallas for the last couple of hours for me.. anybody else have updates from the DFW Metroplex .

Reporting from DT FT Worth:
Current Temp is 28 at 1:10pm
snow has stopped for the most part, a few flurries are still flying around.
Bridges and overpasses are totally covered with ice and are very slow going. Main Highway looks to still be in good shape with traffic moving along about 45 to 50 mph. about 1/4 inch of accumulation from what I'm seeing.

From NE corner of GWB/75:

27 degrees with light to moderate snow falling. I don't know about the bridges and overpasses since I haven't been outside since about 12pm. We were given the green light to leave early and I may do that within the hour. My commute doesn't involve overpasses, but only small bridges over creeks.

For accumulations, the only word I can use is "dusting". And that's stretching it.

It is 37F at Hooks airport right now. Things should probably level out some from here and then drop again later in the day.

I was wondering if Weatherbug has very accurate readings on the temperature, because they have my area as 38F while the NWS has a reading of 42F. Granted these two sources are at different locations, and the span of just a few miles could yield drastically different temperatures. I am inclined to, by default, yield to the reliability of the NWS source rather than Weatherbug, but I am just curious as to whether or not Weatherbug dispenses accurate data.

You guys in DFW have a lull coming but more just MAY be on the way. In just the last two frames, some new radar returns are showing up to the NW of Fort Worth heading SE. It shows up much better in a loop, but I've circled the areas here:



Maybe the trend will continue.
