strong and even severe thunderstorms with temps below 32?

#1 Postby cpdaman » Wed Nov 29, 2006 8:33 pm

in the areas of north central texas and central oklahoma temperatures are running from30-33 degrees in an area where there are impressive looking thunderstorms

now since i live in s fl i don't get this type of weather, but usually when i see reports of thundersnow it has a more winter looking radar signature with bands of heavyier snow embedded with thunder, well the radar out of fredrick , OK has a summer like appearance of thunderstorms with temps running at or below freezing in MOST reporting stations like

lawton, OK 30
chandler, OK 30 TSorm

i wonder how much sleet and freezing rain these stroms are throwing down

The radar could be seeing some ice, and shows MUCH stronger on the radar...

i know what your talking about but i don't think that's the case here because

these cells with the orange and red return on radar were coming up from areas south of the front where temps were in the 60's and the color representation was not changing as the storm rode north and into the colder air.

on weather underground i can find about 5 locations now reporting thunderstorms and temperatures between 28 and 30 f

the cold arctic air is so dense and heavy it is infiltrating ( undercutting) lower levels of the air first, where there is still warm unstable air aloft, these are legitimate thunderstorm cells riding northward over the arctic boundry and they are dumping tons or freezing rain or sleet in n central texas and central OK.

nw texas is starting to get "DUMPED ON" someone north and west of amarillo will see a foot

It's thundersleeting in several parts of Oklahoma right now, yes its possible it happens a couple times a year here. It is not common but it does happen from time to time.

I do remember a night in 1992 or 1993 that it was below freezing and Huge storms came into SE Houston from the south. Temp stayed below freezing, and a lot of slush was in the trees, but it came down so fast that it didn't get a chance to all out freeze. I remember that it rained so hard my street flooded a bit. With this kind of weather in this part of the world who knows. When you get far away from what normaly happens, the computers are no help. Heck look at the Christmas Eve snow in Galveston. Don't I remember seeng a note from the weather service that "reports of snow in Galveston are false"?

Has there ever been a tornado with snow, sleet or freezing rain and a sub-freezing temperature? If so, any significant one?
