AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHARLESTON SC
711 AM EST TUE NOV 21 2006
...THUNDERSNOW REPORTED IN DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON AND ACROSS CHARLESTON
COUNTY...
.UPDATE...
SNOW/SLEET HAS BEEN MIXING IN WITH THE RAIN THIS MORNING ACROSS CHARLESTON COUNTY...INCLUDING DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON. THUNDERSNOW HAS EVEN BEEN OBSERVED...INCLUDING HERE AT THE OFFICE IN NORTH CHARLESTON. THIS IS A REMARKABLE EVENT...CONSIDERING THIS IS TO THE BEST OF OUR KNOWLEDGE THE EARLIEST SNOWFALL EVER IN CHARLESTON!
ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES ARE STILL ABOVE FREEZING...GENERALLY IN THE MID 30S...VERY COLD AIR ALOFT HAS BEEN ABLE TO MIX TO THE
SURFACE...ESPECIALLY IN HEAVIER BANDS OF PRECIPITATION. HAVE ALREADY ISSUED A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT FOR CHARLESTON AND COASTAL COLLETON COUNTIES...AND WILL UPDATE THE FORECAST SHORTLY. THE KCHS HAS BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT THUNDERSNOW.
Gotta love it Charleston,SC see snow before most of the NE and Mid ATL

Still snowing here in Charleston...
Earliest ever recorded event.... I love it. Reminds me of Lake Tahoe back home...
Even seen it sticking to a few cars in the heavier showers. According to local Mets, the initial storm scenerio is changing. They didn't expect this cold shot to drop temps to the mid 30's, as they've been steadily falling since midnight. They're talking about the wintery mix lasting till noon and maybe taking over again tonight... Crazy.

It has stopped here, but it was interesting to watch. I like to watch the snowflakes float toward the service, but this snow fell to the ground like rocks. It made a lot of noise hitting the windows and the impact on the ground could be heard. Some of the flakes were over two inches long and very thick.

Continues to sleet here with rain ... in the last 30 minutes, we've had a heavier burst of banding producing a good amount of sleet (moreso than rain mixed) ...
As for the question of SE NC, the dynamics aren't quite as strong there, and the ULL is move over Coastal South Carolina where FRZ levels are all the way down to the 950mb level... heavier bands are drawing and tapping that cold air straight down to the SFC, although no ground accumulations are occurring...
