Houston snowfall of 1895 (and more)

#1 Postby Extremeweatherguy » Sun Nov 12, 2006 4:29 pm

I came across a picture of the 1895 blizzard in Houston, TX. This storm dumped 15-30" of snow across the entire region and took over a week to melt. This is the first time I have ever managed to find a picture of that event:

The thing that makes this even more amazing though is that the picture above is not even the final result. The storm did not end until Feb. 15th, meaning that even MORE snow fell than was pictured above. Crazy isn't it?! Could you imagine if this happened again today?

BTW, here is the link to the sight where I found the picture: http://bayoucityhistory.blogspot.com/20 ... wfall.html

Amazing picture indeed!

I personally love looking for old pictures and articles on storms. I have a huge collection; some of my favorites are of the Portland Gale of November 1898.

thanks for that link! Also great pictures. It is amazing how much snow south Texas and the coast got from that storm! Nothing compares to the 1895 snowfall though.

I just looked around a little bit more and came across this other great Houston historical snow picture site:

http://members.aol.com/IslandWx/jbclimo ... onsnow.htm

This one includes many great shots from the storms of 1949 (3.1"), 1960 (4.4"), 1973 (3.3"), 1985 (0.4"), and 1989 (1.7").

It is strange to see someone shoveling the snow in Houston!
