... Snowiest day in October on record for Buffalo...
A record daily snowfall of 8.3 inches was set at Buffalo on
Thursday, October 12th. This breaks the old record for the snowiest
day in October of 6 inches which was set on October 13, 1909
and again on October 31, 1917.
The culprit for this record snow was the earliest lake effect snow
storm on record to hit the city of Buffalo.

... Snowiest day in October on record for Buffalo...
The final tally for the daily snowfall at Buffalo on Thursday,
October 12 was 8.6 inches. This shatters the old record for the
snowiest day in October of 6 inches which was set on October 13,
1909 and again on October 31, 1917.
The culprit for this record snow was the earliest lake effect snow
storm on record to hit the city of Buffalo.

A major early season lake effect snow storm continued to hammer
the region around Buffalo New York through the wee hours of
Friday morning.
By 3am, the Buffalo Airport had received 14 inches of snow with
nearly 4 inches occurring in the past hour. Elsewhere, in the
Village of Depew, the snow had quickly piled up to 24 inches since
it began less than 12 hours ago. This is amazing considering the
waters of Lake Erie were a warm 62 degrees as the snowband formed
late Thursday.
Utility companies were reporting well over 1000,000 customers
without power. The widespread power outages were a result of a
combination of very heavy water laden snow accumulating on trees
that still have most of their leaves. Trees limbs break under the
weight of the snow and bring down power lines as well. Tree damage
across the area has been very significant.
The entire area the storm has affected is only about 25 miles
wide, extending from Orchard Park in central Erie
County... northward through the city of Buffalo to Niagara Falls.
Storm totals are expected to top out in the range of 18 to 30
inches particularly in the northern half of Erie County. Brisk
well aligned winds will extend the band as far inland as the
western suburbs of Rochester at times. At the same time, no snow
at all is expected across the traditional snowbelt area well
south of Buffalo.
The snowband will stay locked in across the area within a few
miles of the city of Buffalo through the morning rush hour then
gradually drift northward out of the area and weaken as the
morning progresses.
Driving bans exist in many communities. In addition, in areas
where power outages have occurred, do not walk around outside
unless absolutely necessary. You could contact downed power lines
and risk electrocution.

Buffalo has received 21 inches of snow! In addition, lightning lit the sky at numerous times throughout the afternoon and overnight hours.

This is my hometown just south of buffalo in a town called west seneca. I spoke to some friends and family who are in cheektawaga and amherst they have reports of 29 inches at thier homes. Everyones prety much under travel ban which is usual for this. One thing I miss is the 4-6 inch per hour snowfall rates. Can't shovel it quick enough

The local Buffalo tv stations which we receive up here in Toronto via cable... WIVB (CBS), WGRZ (NBC) and WKBW (ABC) are all carrying continuous live winter storm news... pre-empting regualr broadcast shows ....they say every other tree is down throughout the Buffalo Metro area... the Buffalo version of a hurricane.
Their local Fox station (WUTV Buffalo) is off the air.

Just got off the phone with my Mom in Buffalo... been without power for 14 hours.... they are freezing, and there is atleast 12" of snow on the ground. There are driving bans all over the area.....My family jazzes me about hurricanes.... now I'm jazzing them back about this. I'll keep you guys posted.

Stratus......I was born in Buffalo, and lived there through the Blizzard of 77...woo hoo.....You're probably too young to remember that. Here it is after 2:00pm, and my Mom and Dad still don't have power. Thank goodness they have a generator!!!! And yes... it will be messy next week.....eat some real wings for me!!!!!!!!

The grand total for this storm in Buffalo NY was 22.6 inches at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Oct 12 8.6 inches **DAILY RECORD**

There is 15 inches on the ground as of 5 pm tonight.
Prior to this historic event, the greatest one day snowfall in Buffalo during October was just 6 inches.

What? Due, calm down. There's no reason to leave the website just because they told you you post too many topics. There's no reason to be sensitive about it. You make lots of good posts, just keep the topics down a bit and no one will complain (it doesn't bother me, but generally you're supposed to keep just a few topics for major events such as this).
