Farmers Almanac Warns of Severe North American Winter

What does everyone think of their prediction? I personally enjoying reading the Farmers Almanac Forecasts, from an Entertainment stand point. Although I've read that a study was done that showed the publication's accuracy was slightly better than flipping a coin; over the 60%.

I hope they are right, after last winters warmth and the heat of this summer, we could use a good cold winter. I want to see snow here in eastern NC

I hope so. Kinda.. I would like a few snowfalls down here in the Delta like we had last year, but I know that means a harsh harsh winter for those up north.

I agree with them, I think this could be a a very violent winter with the cold and snow.

If this does end up being one of the coldest winters EVER recorded, like they are predicting, then I may even be in for a little winter here in Houston too.

I hope we have a harsh winter. I've been waiting for another one for a long time...I love cold and snow.

I don't have a copy of the Farmer's Almanac yet. Does it say this may be one of the coldest winters ever recorded? I'm ready for a frigid winter.

I got that statement from the article at the top of the page.

Here is the actual quote:

The 190-years old publication predicts with an accuracy between 80 and 85% how weather will evolve and Americans should worry: OFA says this winter will be one of the coldest ever recorded.

The Colorado mountains need a prolonged cold spell of -40 or lower. The lack of cold weather is becoming devastating to our forest. Even where I live it hasn'r dropped into the -40's in 15 years or so, and this is causing havock. :(

I just realized that two of the coldest winters ever (1899 and 1977) occured during weak el ninos. Since this winter is expected to have a weak el nino, I can see how there would be a higher than normal risk. Will be interesting to watch.

BTW: winter 2004 also had a weak El Nino and featured the great christmas eve TX snowstorm.

How would winter be affected by a Super El Nino?

I wonder how much that "Snowier than Normal" over NTX will be in the form of sleet and freezing rain?

Cold and snowy in the Pacific Northwest usually means cold and snowy here in northern Utah as well...sweet!

A weak to moderate el nino will cause an active southern branch of the jet stream and actually increase the possibilities of nor'easters. Accuweather has a nice graphic up concerning the effects of a weak to moderate el nino similar to the one that is expected this winter.
