Stay safe everyone in NC tonight. I know how frightening night time tropical systems can be, especially when the gusts come in. With Rita we received gusts to almost hurricane force but since it was in the middle of the night it felt MUCH worse than it was, I'm sure others can attest to that too.

We are having our heaviest rains right now. It is coming down sideways with the wind. Our current wind is staying between 35 and 45 mile per hour right now. It will be interesting to see what it looks like in the morning. The house has a front porch that is shaded from most of the weather. The beach road (North Virgina Dare Trail) appears to be covered by water. We have now received about 6 inches of rain since 9ish this morning. Ill have another update in a couple of hours.

I think the anoemeter on the roof has either broken off or we have lost one of the cups. The wind is blowing very strong and the anoemeter is reporting winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour. Just heard something crash outside...so we went out and take a look to see what it was, and it was my rain gauge taking a spill. Luckily, it just emptied it and I didnt loose anything.

Fairfield, New Bern, NC 11:15 pm

Well just came back from a little walk down to check out the Neuse River and our harbour here. The river looks to be up about a foot from what it was early this evening. The harbour still has about 10 inches till it covers the docks and about another foot till it over flows into the parking lot, so it most likely will overflow before this is over with. Anyone for some fresh hand caught fish, right from the parking lot? Hmmm wonder if they would sell on Ebay.... LoL

It has been non-stop rain all evening. Not really hard pouring but rather just a good moderate rain. A couple wind gusts in the low 30's but thats been it. Actually this evening its kind of nice cause we can open the porch screen door and just let the breeze blow in the fresh air. Great change from contstant air conditioner and I so love the smell of the salt in the air.

Am planning a walk back to the neuse about 1am our time to check how much the storm surg and high tide will bring it up.

Still not over yet so stay safe all my neighbors.

I just heard a clap of thunder!!! Also, here is my wx station: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... =KNCHAVEL3
To let you guys know, the anemometer is very protected, so the wind speed probably wont get to exciting, however the pressure should be right...ignore the humidity/dew point as it is messed up, but the temp is close...

the rainfall is off, as I currently have 3.54, not 0.31...so I will fix that tomorrow. The data should upload as long as I have internet and/or power...bed time for me...night...

quite now

#191 Postby emeraldislencguy » Thu Aug 31, 2006 11:48 pm

the wind has dropped to about 16 mph and the rain is just a drizzle--quite surprising since the storm is still blowing hard at wrigthsville beach and at topsail.

I know you folks said at the top of the thread "SC/NC" report in and all, but I thought I might add some VA imput to this as well.

I`m about a block and a half inland from the Chesapeake Bay, just north of Fort Monroe. We`ve had a bit of light rain since earlier today, started about late mid-day.

Light gusts of around 43 mph have been recorded, sustained toward 30+.

The major problem as I see it at this time is the filling of the bay, as to allowing for dranage later.

It will be later today before we will see most of the effects of "Ernesto", I`m sure.

Power failures mostly will of course depend on the trees being able to hold their ground as the winds grow stronger, as well as what limbs that are for the most part dried out snap lose.

I`ll report more as things develop over the course of the day.

Kenansville getting heavy rain and gust to 52 MPH....About an hour ago we had the worst of the evening with thunder and high winds. Rain has been hard and steady. We seem to be along the direct path of the storm

Jacksonville here. Just woke up to winds making everything whistle and moan. Wind is gusting to 46. Pressure is 29.41. I think we're in the worst now and soon things will get better.

I hope all you guys are doing OK. You are definitly getting the brunt of this storm.
We had some gusts and too much rain here but nothing like what you all are getting. I know we have some flooding out here, Some of Bus 17 is closed, a car flipped on the Waccamaw bridge from Hyrdo planeing....Have not been out on the roads since 11pm and will see if there is any real damage here tomorrow. The worst thing right here where I am is the pool overflowed and the pond is on the verge of it. So I cannot complain. Hope you all fair just as well. :bday:

Conditions have certainly detoriated here. Our winds are now NNE at about 35 mph with lots of gusts reaching 45 mph. The rain is very heavy and is now blowing in sheets. The wind has tossed some items about. Not really able to go to sleep with the wind howling and beating against the windows. I wasn't expecting it to be as strong here and we are still about an hour and a half from the strongest wind band.

Everyone continue to stay safe as it passes on by!!

Just checking in quickly....

Just had a tornado warning for Dare County. Very heavy rain has fallen. Not venturing out to check rain gauge as we have a lot of lightning and thunder right now. Winds are unavaiable as I am still not sure what is up with the anoemeter on the house. Lightning is very vivid. What I can see of the swells, it is still up to the 2nd dune. Thats all I have for now. Will report back in when I have the chance to.
