"1954 - August 31,
Hurricane Carol slammed into eastern New England. Wind gusts exceeded 120 mph on the south coast. Block Island, Rhode Island reported a gust to 130 mph. Boston reported sustained winds of 86 mph with a gust to 100 mph. Tides were 10-15 feet above normal. Providence inundated by a near record high tide. 60 lives were lost, damages totaled $450 million. The severity of this storm was only topped by the 1938 Hurricane."

Wow, Hybrid....RI is my home state and I didn't even remember this. There has been a special on the Hurricane of 38 that has run a couple of times in the last week or so, though.
Unbelieveable to us Rhode Islanders that this could happen (either of these). We are so used to getting TS force winds, at best.
I think that's why I am so into hurricanes. I've had a taste of them since I moved to Tampa 3 years ago, but never truly experienced one. They intrigue me.
