amazing hurricane charley video

#1 Postby Extremeweatherguy » Tue Aug 08, 2006 4:32 pm

I came across this amazing hurricane Charley video on youtube today. I had seen pieces of this video in the past, but I had never seen the whole thing. It does a good job in showing how powerful a Cat. 3+ force wind really is.

 Yeah that is amazing! Wow! Watching all the debris fly around is scary stuff, not to mention that whole roof they caught getting ripped off. BTW how do you know that is cat. 3 winds? I didn't see any information on the video at all there. Didn't seem to bright to be sitting in that car they were showing at the end. The most amazing wind videos I have seen have been Charley videos, he was small but tore through this whole state like a buzz saw. :(

I've been in many TC's myself, and that's certainly stronger than cat 3 winds. ;)

Wouldn't be surprised if it gusted up to about 160mph there.

I have seen Charley's video that has truly 140+ winds and gusts, but not this one. I would guess 125 tops in that one.

Having caught the eastern eyewall from Charley here on Pine Island, I would venture to say those winds depicted in the video were sustained at 120 mph. You can definately tell the closest approach of the eyewall about halfway thru the segment. Those gusts were in excess of 140 mph. I would love to know exactly where in Punta Gorda that was filmed at. Judging from the buildings and wind direction, it had to be close to Marion and 41. Now across the Peace River, I saw an unabbreviated film of a gas station being destroyed by the eye, and those winds were much greater than what we saw south of the river. As far as the tree's are concerned, you can see the Sabal Palms just going with the flow, no big deal, whereas the Royals and Queens, had their tops blown off. TheShrimper

I did not say it was Cat. 3; I said Cat. 3+. The reason I did this is because it is hard to gage the exact sustained winds based on this video (though they did likely reach strong Cat. 3 or Cat. 4 strength).

BTW: Your gust estimate was correct. In Punta Gorda, gusts hit 140-175mph, with a 173mph gust recorded at the medical center.

Unconfirmed gusts but in the NHC post storm report.

173mph in Punta gorda
159mph at the Charlotte county airport

This would be a good video to show the danger of flying debris. Crazy stuff.
