using the 2000 wealth normalization factor

Okay, so some are on the "cost" thingy. Frankly of all the ways to "rank" storms, I think this one is the silliest of them all--simply because it's something that DID NOT HAPPEN. I mean if we're going to deal in "hypotheticals"... and let's face it this ranking is all about "IF".. then there are a dozen other scenaria (if not more) that would top all those on that list-- I prefer to deal with actual events that took place and not propped up hypothetical scenarios. JMO.

I suppose those, "Wilma" figures take only damage to the US... but perhaps some are accounting for damages to Mexico? (rhetorical)... I know Mexico isn't the most open about admitting damages done by storms--at least by what I'd read in the past.

Yep, Franklin Creek and Orange Grove area was really hammered as was Pecan.

Most of those homes in Pecan (near HWY.90) are all gone now. Katrina finished them off. The Army Corps of Engineers tore them all down, FINALLY!

the updated NOAA report for Katrina has total damage at 81.2, insured is 1/2 that. Now, NOAA's report may not be 100% correct

Wilma's a very interesting storm. At the time it was crossing Southern Florida, it appeared to be invigorated over land as some cooler, drier air was wrapping onto the NW'ern edge of the circulation in which considerably "charged" several areas with very strong bursts .... I have relatives in South Florida, and she told me that with previous storms she went through (Jeanne, Frances), Wilma by far was much much worse.

The gusting potential of Wilma was by far much stronger than the typical hurricane, b/c of the cooler, drier air that started to filter into a portion of the circulation. When you beat down at an object with sustained CAT 1 winds for several hours with occasional gusts to CAT 2 strength, there will be significant damage. One of things to remember, with CAT 1 hurricanes, many areas will not get sustained hurricane force winds, and the smaller area that does experience it will likely not experience a prolonged period of sustained CAT 1 winds. In Wilma, the expanse of the sustained CAT 1 winds emcompassed a large swath of real estate and it beat down on Southern Florida for hours and hours. The video on the Weather Channel, where Jeff Morrow almost got blown over of where he was videotaping was mindboggling. The winds on video to me was astounding.
