TORNADO destroys 20 houses outside Perth, Australia

#1 Postby tropicana » Sun Aug 06, 2006 11:08 pm

Mon Aug 7, 2006
A MINI tornado has destroyed at least 20 houses in Australind, WA overnight. There are no reports of any injuries following in the wake of the destruction.
Families forced from their homes will be sent to the Leschenault Leisure Centre which has been set up as an emergency camp.

The SES has also called in five Perth crews to help deal with the devestation with more than 250 reports of damage being reported by local residents.

The storm, packing gale force winds, hit just outside the town of Australind, 163km (100 miles) south of Perth, about 1.45am Monday, the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) said.
A FESA spokeswoman on the ground at Australind said they were still coming to grips with the damage.
The destruction was generally limited to a small strip measuring about 100m by 200m, the weather bureau said.
Houses have been unroofed, houses are not standing, there's just total destruction.

The storm also brought down powerlines and police have warned of flooding in the area. .

Why calling this strong tornado a "Mini-tornado"??? A tornado is a tornado, even if it is a F0-tornado In this case it should have been at least a F2.

Is there any australien site with all the tornadoes in this and previous years?

http://australiasevereweather.com/tornado.htm has some photos of past Australian TNs, and a couple from the USA as well.

Thx. P.K., What is the number of tornadoes in the U.K. this year so far? Here in Germany we had at least 40 confirmed and about 70-90 cases under investigation.

generally we get more severe weather in La Nina type conditions

in April 1999 was the Sydney Hailstorm which is our costliest natural disaster

which caused damages of around $1.7 Billion AUS

I think we were up to 60 events by the beginning of July including FCs. Looking at TNs from our forum it looks to be around 20 but don't quote me on that.
