Do other creatures know when a Hurricane is about to hit?

Like can you tell by the way animals, inserts, etc act that they know if a bad storm is coming? I am just curious if this has ever been tested or proved?

Yes, The day before Rita hit that morning there were no birds, squirrels etc...EEEARRYY feeling.

We've kinda brought this up every storm the last couple of seasons it seems. I think it was last season or the one before that that someone brought up the sea turtles and where their nests were that year....birds are brought up pretty regularly.

I don't know that this has ever been tested, but there are lots of S2Kers that have their theories :wink:

I do notice birds collecting more food ahead of approaching low pressure.

I know that my dogs acted oddly before Ivan and Dennis. The dogs were really odd acting the day before Ivan.

Birds disappeared before Katrina.... I mean there were none for miles around for days... it was weird.

This may sound really crazy but here goes. I've lived in Pensacola most of my life (45 yrs) Before Ivan came through 2 years ago...5 praying mantis attached themselves to my sliding glass door trying to get inside. I had never even seen ONE as long as I've lived here. Then again, last year...before Dennis, one attached himself to my car window. Not sure this proves anything at all...but its very interesting. Needless to say...IM on the lookout for the little critters this year too. Hoping I don't see any

Yes, there have been some tests.

Elephants can detect a thunderstorm coming. It's known that they can feel the vibration of a distant lightning strike.

Many animals react to lowering pressures by hoarding food. Lowering pressure can mean bad weather coming, so hunting opportunities may be limited in the future.

Whether animals stage mass evacuations is not known.

Yes they know. Its in their instinct to survive. My grandmother who passed away years ago experienced the 1915 hurricane that hit Galveston while living in Pearland.......yes my family was one of the founding families of PEarland, TX. The day before the storm the horses plowing the crops were impossible to controll. My grandmother remembers leaning against the wall as it bowed inward. They had know idea what was really going on. It destroyed Friendswood and Alvin as well as everything S of there.

Well when Rita was aiming at Houston the animals dissappered. Then when the track changed and we knew we were going to escape the worst the birds and squirrels were everywhere celebrating. I SWEAR

I also read a story about Audery where all the crawfish were walking out of the bayous. Cant verify this one however

My family always says that if you see a lot of snakes and turtles moving around then the area will have an active hurricane season. I even think this may be true.
