Definitions for all the acronyms you guys use!

#1 Postby trendal » Tue Jul 25, 2006 3:47 pm

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this...if so, mods please move it!

I've been a lurker here for the past little while. I have no meteorology experience beyond what I read on the net about it...and therein lies the problem!

Is there somewhere I could go to find out what all the acronyms you guys use mean? Things like LLC, MLC, ULC (which, I gather, are all related?) for example. I managed to get the first one that stumped me on my own (ERC, thanks google!) but there's a few I keep coming accross that I can't seem to find any info on!

Thanks guys, and keep up the work! Great site!

problem is many acronyms we use are missing....

I know it takes time but it would be REALLY nice to have a link on the Talkin Tropics page somewhere that takes you to a webpage of storm2k acronyms in alphabetical order.

What would be even more slick is a text box in the upper corner of the webpage where you can put in an acroynm and another page pops up with the results....

I think the first option could work though...

It would really help our new members :D

thats true, if you ask, you usually get a quick response but some people prefer to just "lurk." Also, it is nice to have storm2k common acronyms in one place.

One way to come up with the list is to open up a topic about "storm2k commonly used acronyms" and then build a webpage based off member inputs. Each acroynm would have the acroynm expanded out and then a brief description of what it means if necessary.

Once the list is built, the link that you would make available would just redirect you to this list of acroynms/descriptions in alphabetical order for quick reference.

Southerngale yes I agree we had a topic about acroynms but if I want to find a particular one - like a ULL it may take a bit long to search that topic and peruse through the links

My suggestion has them all in one place and only includes the commonly used acronyms. Links can be provided for the less ubiquitious terminology

Anyway its just a thought!!!

Perhaps that could be done, but you could also just save the link in your favorites. :)

That's true. I think we storm2kers have actually come up with our own acronyms also :P

Thanks for all the info guys! Between that bunch of links, I don't think I'll have any more problems with the acronyms!

And really, I shouldn't be complaining about acronyms at all....being a computer tech, we probably take the cake as far as use of acronyms go :ggreen:

Welcome trendal.

Here's a link that may help, though most of these abbreviations aren't used in public anymore: http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/html/contract.html

This isn't really an acronym, but where is KMCF?

That's the station identifier for Macdill AFB, FL.

If its got a K in front of it there's a pretty good chance it's a station identifier. Those are pretty complicated, I bet a pro knows many of them, but I'm not sure anybody knows all of them. There are thousands across the U.S. alone.

Thankfully we can look them up: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/tg/siteloc.shtml
