Yes it still is quiet out there. I have a good feeling about this season not being as bad as earlier thought.

Now remember, the rational people in weather forecasting said that the season is going to be normal to slightly above normal. It was the people who were forecasting a 2005 redux that are going to be wrong.

Just watch the winds turn either N or NE on the South Texas or NE Mexico coasts and you see if there's anything developing on the surface.

Two things:

First, this is 98L not 96L. The thread title is incorrect.

Second, here's a new GARP image. Just a lot of rain moving into Texas. You can see a weak low-level swirl southwest of Brownsville. Squalls are now moving ashore all along the TX/LA coasts. Development not expected, but heavy rain will be a major threat:

Whether it develops now or not doesn't matter, flooding rains are headed for Texas and Louisiana and to me that's enough to keep paying attention to the situation  . It's about to start raining here and I haven't seen this much weather coming off the gulf since Rita

You guys and galls in TX and LA better stay safe, especially LA. This storm would be like Katrina coming again but the only thing to worry about is the flooding.

Definitely...people seem too focused on whether or not the disturbance gets a name or not. It's the rains that are the top killer, not the winds.

Agreed, don't throw that name around like that either.

Just stepped outside near the Galleria as the first line (or second one if you count yesterday) moved through. No rain but the wind was stronger than I remember with either Frances or Faye.

Not a good choice of wording!

The center that is on land looks like it's fading somewhat.

Someone a little earlier posted a gust to 56MPH in Galveston...winds are definitely gusty there.

I know, but flooding will be a big problem with this storm. Sorry if anyone was offended by what I said earlier.

The flooding of Katrina was largely caused by storm surge and the breaking of the levees...not rainfall

No, no, learning is fine...it's just that Katrina is a storm in its own league and really can't be compared to any storm.

It is kind of like when people used to compare storms to Camille along the Miss Coast. It strikes a cord...

I think 98L deserves to be named just based on impressive convection. :D
