I think whoever at NHC pronounced it Burl was incorrect, and rather than correct it, they're just going with both. The NHC said at the beginning of the season that it was BER-ril.

I've met two people named Beryl before. I think it's more common in parts of the South.

Is Beryl a common name? NO.

The WMO, NHC, whoever else, should NOT use uncommon names!!

Apparently it could be either gender. :darrow:

P.S.: For you young'uns who don't remember when television was 3 stations at most and a test pattern after the national anthem, that's Uncle Miltie.

Oh yeah I forgot about that... but then again Milton Berle was just a *little* before my time.

No, George is a fairly common name, Georges (the French pronunciation) isn't that common at all here in the US. Heck, I can hardly say it, and I took French in high school.

Why don't we change her name lol.. Start a petition to change her name. Something like Becky, or Beth or something pretty and much more common

Actually it is like Cheryl tpc's explanation. It is a species of gemstone. Beryls include Emerald, Aquamarine, Morganite, etc. Funny, never thought of gender (as a Gemologist that is). I assume since Alberto was the first storm than Beryl must be a females name. Never have run across anyone named Beryl though.

I think she looks like a Bethany. But we might confuse her if we changed her name now!

could we not just pick names that are easy to pronounce? Beryl is the last B name I would choose - it's hard to tell if it is a male or female. Why makes things more difficult than they need to be?

Betsy
Bonnie
Brianne

These are simple and to-the-point names.

Well, Betsy is retired and Bonnie is currently in use, the last time in 2004.
