It's spelled the same as the mineral, which I've always heard as bare-l, but that doesn't mean anything I guess.

The NHC says to pronounce it BER-ril, which would sound like Cheryl. Their pronunciation guide says to pronounce Bertha as BUR-tha, so thus, in Beryl's case, it's pronounced as a short e, rather than a u.

REGARDING THE PRONUNCIATION OF BERYL...A REVIEW OF SEVERAL
DICTIONARIES SHOWS THAT BOTH BER'-IL AND BURL ARE ACCEPTED
PRONUNCIATIONS...AND IN FACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DIRECTIVE
SPECIFIES THE FORMER...TWO SYLLABLE...PRONUNCIATION. THE ONLY BERYL
I PERSONALLY KNOW ALSO PRONOUNCES IT BER'-IL. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY
CONFUSION.

I've always pronounced it BER-il. I won't pronounce it "burl", it just sounds too ugly that way.

If you think the debate over pronouncing Beryl's bad, anyone remember George a couple years ago?

(I don't think I spelled it correctly above but I thing the NHC said it was correctly pronounced as Zorse or something like that!)

They really need to make up their minds. It's going back and forth. I'm just going to stick with what they said at the beginning of the season, BER-ril.

Really? I didn't remember a debate over that one. Georges is a fairly common name and is pronounced Zhorzh. The only thing I remember then was local mets mispronouncing it.

They did, otherwise it would have appeared in 2004, and the 2004 G storm was Gaston.

I've always pronounced it BER'-il and I'm not changing my mind. I even tried "burl" when they said that's how it is pronounced, but I couldn't get myself to say it that often at all.

Hey Andrew92, that is the way I have been pronouncing it as well, and I heard yesterday the OCMs on TWC pronouncing it Ber-il, as well.
