All who live in the NE caribbean remember well Hurricane Bertha on this date in 1996.My experience with it as the eye passed around 50 miles north of San Juan was torrential rain and winds gusting up to 50 mph but nothing more than that.

I remember when she made landfall near Wilmington that year. That was the beginning to the eastern NC hurricane onslaught.

I was only 5 at the time...but Bertha did change my life...We were in the process of moving our trailer from MCAS Cherry Point to central Va...well the stuff was all up in Va but the trailer was down in NC still, my parents dropped me off at grandmas house, where we were going to put the trailer about 150 yards away from her house, and left. I was begging and crying and screaming to come with them, but they refused...of course I didnt take it very light-hearted...(notice my interest in Tropical Weather now? its all pretty much due to Bertha, I had already liked weather before she hit, but Bertha was the nail in the coffin so to say) Most people would stay out of their trailers if a Cat 1 was going to impact the area...but not my parents... They came back saying that tops of pine trees were touching the ground but werent breaking, that some of the nearby MP's forced them to evacute to the local gym DURING the hurricane, and that a power transformer across the street from the gym exploded, so they got a nice fireworks show. The trailer itself did remarkable...not one shingle came off nor did one piece of siding, we were the only ones in the trailer park on base that did not receive any damage.

Yeah I remmber her she is the one the turned my dog upside down while in the dog house. She would never go back in there after that. Funny thing she knew when a storm was coming after that too. She would try and get i the house. But we lost her between Dinnis and Floyd. She was 17 years old. Was glad she was in so much pain. She was a three leg dog.

Hurricane Bertha was noteworthy for being an unusually early Cape Verde hurricane.

I remember it for being the first Hurricane I ever tracked, and remember being hit by.

the only time i ever went directly thru an eye of a hurricane. The crossed my county from the south moving due north. The winds went calm and it seemed to happen almost instantly within a minute or so the winds went from gusting to 80+ to calm. The wierdest part was how you could hear the other side coming in a ever growing rumble as the eye was about to complete its trek across us.I was 21 at the time and was already interested in canes but she was the first real hit we had taken in many years. To my surprise we were hit harder a few weeks later by fran when we had a peak wind gust of 106mph which was way worse than bertha.

The center of Bertha, as a still 50 kt tropical storm, passed very close to my house; in the predawn hours of July 14th. The wind and rain were so loud that they woke me out of a sound sleep around 3:00 am local time. I was actually surprised with the strength of the system being the most wicked since Bob in 1991, and there for a couple of hours I was concerned that I had only half heartily prepared for her. I was lucky, and that was only minimum damage in my area, but that night is an experience I will not soon forget.

Bertha was the first Hurricane I ever tracked and remember being in (I dont remember Bob, I was a year old)

I lived in Philly at the time

we had a sustained wind of 34mph with a gust to 41mph at the storms peak.

Harvey Cedars New Jersey saw a peak gust of 63mph
Atlantic city had a peak gust of 42mph and a 2.23 foot storm surge.
Avalon New Jersey (where I was for Isabel) had sustained winds at 41mph

I remember Bertha well. I lived in FL at the time and watched it come ashore on TV in the carolinas. I can still vividly remember pictures on TWC of garage doors being blown in on many coastal homes.
