Excellent NASA 2005 Hurricane Season Animations Released
haven't seen this link posted here, but there are some excellent NASA satellite and SST animations, including one 800+ mb animated satellite/SST animation with narration of the 2005 season ("27 Storms Arlene to Zeta").
Go through the videos watching certain areas, like the Caribbean Sea. Note all the tropical waves that moved through but didn't develop. Remember that as we look at each wave entering the Caribbean this year. On average, about 10-15% of these waves develop during the season. That's about 1 in 10.

Prehaps I'm hearing things but there is a little wrong info in that, for example stating that Katrina was the 4th strongest and Rita the 6th strongest hurricane ever when in fact it was the other way round!!!!!
pretty big mistake that one if I'm right!

I believe this has been out for a while--although perhaps not all 27... I'll have to check my MPEG's, but it is really a great video... tracking 'em all from start to finish. Thanks for the link... weather enthusiasts eat up this sort of thing.

There were 2 earlier versions of the entire season with SSTs and satellite. Both only covered the western Atlantic. The first stopped with Wilma and the 2nd stopped on Dec. 11th.
Now they have extended the region to the whole Tropical Atlantic and continued through January 8th, 2006. They also added the "27 Storms" narrative version.
The videos work great for a quick review of the 2005 season. I use them near the opening of my presentations.

Thanks... mine was the 2nd, apparently because it included some of the Greek storms. but I will update to this one... it was a season for the books and my Earth Science classes will love watching this.

I had previously downloaded both the first and the second versions of this video, and am now downloading this new one. Thanks for the notification!
EDIT @ 2030Z: This is so much better than the previous versions! Soothing music, awesome narrator who explains the simplistics...I like the "hurricane symbol" that jolts out where a storm forms. That's pretty neat. SST map, shows Vince, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta clearly...awesome.

I dunno, might be some quirk of my computer; but all I get when I try the link is a loooooong period of seeing my media player with "connecting" showing... tried it three times... no success. Guess my old copy whch went through to Alpha will have to suffice.

Try directly saving it to your computer by right-clicking on the link, and going to "Save Target As" (assuming you're using Internet Explorer). It'll download, and then you can view it.

That did it, RattleMan... Thanks....
And yes, they did get Rita and Katrina mixed up in the intensity order, apparently some of the data was clearly dated as it had Katrina's toll at 1200 when it's surpassed 1800 by now; but that is understandable--these are minor things. It will make a nice presentation in any science class covering tropical weather.

My Internet Explorer has greyed out the "save target as..." thing.
Any suggestions?
