My family knew that "Tropical Update time" was sacred, and they only poked a little fun at my obsession with watching (and taping) the Weather Channel. Most times they were watching too, especially when "the man" was on.
Even though the Weather Channel may have become a bit too mainstream in recent years, I believe that John Hope's principles and spirit are still a big part of the tropical weather coverage there, especially with Steve Lyons and Jim Cantore.
This thread sure has brought back fond memories. I think I'll get out some of my old TWC tapes and watch them. Thanks, Luis!
My sentiments pretty much echo what's already been said about John Hope, the calm voice of reason in a crisis situation. I remember in particular his handling of the situation during Andrew. One of my favorite of the old TWC tapes was "Dark Days of August", which was the Andrew coverage in particular. The behind the scenes stuff shown there was great, with John acting as both coach and quarterback of the on-air team. His briefing of the troops was done in the same manner as his on-air delivery - calm, factual, straight to the point. With John, you felt as if he were talking to you on the same level, and not talked "down to". I still miss his reports and I'm still trying to warm to Dr. Lyons, who IMO will not fill Dr. Hope's shoes.

When I was growing up I always loved watching John giving forecasts because he kind of just gave me a feeling of calm. His extensive knowledge and explinations are definitely missed when it comes to storms affecting the US. When John came on the tv people just shut up and listened to what he had to say. Here's to you John... we all miss you man!

I met John Hope at a Trade Show in Miami in the late 80's. I was amazed how down to earth he was in real life. I was at that time working for a start up company that delivered weather data to citrus and plant growers throughout the state. He visited my booth and we had a very good chat about weather. I respected him a great deal and what he said you could take to the bank, no doubt. I was very sorry to see him go as he was just starting a retirement...he is surely missed.

I can only echo the sentiments already expressed in this thread. We love and miss you Mr. Hope and no other forecaster currently working holds a candle to you -- or will ever.
I remember the night he was working for Andrew, vividly, before the electricity went off LOL....
(As an aside, I wonder how Camille Hope feels about one of the worst storms in memory being named after her?)

John Hope - I loved his calming, yet so knowledgeable style. A true gentleman, and although I did not know him personally, you could just tell by watching him what a blessing he had to be to his family, friends and co-workers. A kind hearted man, no doubt and a wonderful contributor to great weather casting. We miss you John - Job well done! You were definitely the calm in the eye of the storm. God bless you always.
