Way To Go Jeb
Our very conservative governor today at 4:00 pm declared a state of emergency for Florida and issued evacuation orders for residents of some Florida gulf coast counties. A bit of an overkill wouldn't you say for a disorganized tropical storm that was deteriorating late this afternoon with invading dry air and getting ready to traverse cooler Gulf waters. Jeb was getting all of the intermediate reports from the NHC and still took the overkill politically correct route to exaggerate the risks of this diminishing storm. I swear that I can never remember any governor or authoritative agency in the past declaring a state of emergency and mandated evacuations for a tropical storm! It's that whole Katrina thing that spooked him - trouble is, this is a classic example of crying wolf. Jeb needs to take a reality pill.[/b]

IMO well at least tropical cyclones are being taken seriously.

or perhaps as governer he was looking out for what MIGHT have been best for the people in his state. What if this weakening trend had not occcured and he grew to 85-100mph cane and then everyone would have been crying that jeb waited to long to evacuate.People act like politics are cut and dry no matter what jeb did this time someone would have disagreed!
Maybe if other local officials had been this ready to act last year Katrina wouldn't have killed 1000+ people!

Exactly!! Anyone who lived through the storm surge of '93 in Citrus County is applauding Gov. Jeb. We live about 9 miles from the gulf and it flooded all the way to our street. We couldn't get out for a couple of days. Forget the wind and rain -- it was the surge that devastated this area.
The Governor knows what he is doing!

My only semi-political rant of this hurricane season.
Look at the job Jeb's administration has done with all the hurricanes that hit Florida in 2004-2005.
Then look at the Katrina fiasco.
It's a no brainer who I would prefer to have in charge. Most Floridians with half a brain were not dependent on a FEMA employee with a truckload of Tobasco sauce to feed them.
We planned and we prepped. Thus the government could focus on those residents who really needed the help, the elderly and infirmed.
So if Jeb wants to advise evacuations for a Tropical Storm, it's for a reason. And unless you were here for the No-Name winter storm, you would not understand the paranoia about coastal flooding from almost any system which approaches.

I am not a Jeb Bush fan, but I think his experiences with tropical events in FLA over the past few years have made him quite good in times like this. Calling a State of Emergency is the only thing that allow the staging of needed equipment, personnel, and other resources.
If you remember the No-name storm, people died along that stretch of FLA. This surge can and will drown people.
Good job, Jeb!

Fidel Castro refused to allow TS warnings to go up - probably since he knew it was only a TS. A TS is pretty routine for Western Cuba but how often do you have a TS moving NE into the west coast of Florida. If it happened more and we knew the effects, we probably would not have seen the hype.

He was also quick to act in the 2004 season, so I don't think it was just last season to why he did this, although I am sure it did help. I think he is a great governor and also think he made the right call. Too bad we can't re-elect him back into office this next term as he has already served 2. Way to go Jeb.
