My mom picked this week to come visit me, and part of her trip is a few days on Treasure Island/St. Pete. South edge of the warning zone, and out of the cone of doom. She's scared and inexperienced and totally unprepared. Her first instinct is to drive home (north on I-75 right into the storm), so once I talked her out of that....

I don't imagine she's gonna see much more than TS winds, but that Charley incident has me scared on this one...

She could be back in Broward by 5PM if she leaves now... How bad do you think St. Petes gonna be?

Wait a minute....tell her to listen to the local authorities. If they issue evacuation orders then heed their warnings...telling her to run when it is not warranted is irresponsible.

Tampa Bay may see winds they haven't seen in quite sometime

I am at work now and am a bit nervous myself. I also remember the Charlie incident and am hearing a lot of talk about a possible ENE motion from some posters. (i hope not true)

Our island is only 4ft above sea level at the highest point (other than the constructed bridges). We are currently experiencing extra high astronomical tides with the full moon right now. The high tide worries me a lot. If an evacuation order is given (since it is an A zone) -you would at least need to move your cars, or else insurance won't cover damages. It will be your own negligent fault for not moving it essentially.

If she is staying in ST Pete, shouldn't be a problem as long as she is above Zone B I would say, and not in a mobile home. No need to travel far, just higher than encroaching water.

Cone of doom? Is that phrase necessary? Are you trying to scare people into a panic mode? We must be careful how we phrase things.

You're right warning but I wouldn't wait. They are expecting 6 - 9 ft. storm surge. Suppose to flood just like with Jeanne only a little worse. Downtown Tampa will have water, Snell Isle, Maderia Beach, etc... Of course Pasco, Hernando and Citrus flood easily too.

I used to live just south on St Pete Beach and also on the inland side of the TI causeway. There are definitely low lying spots on the southern barrier islands that flood with just normal thunderstorms. I had some flooding in my home during Gabrielle. I would guess they will call for evacs of zone A but away from the beach in B or higher should be fine. Having said that definitely check with local media.

PLease read all post first brfore you correct. ! I was paraphrasing what the first poster SAID. PLease don't assume the worse. I don't try to scare people. I know the area well as other posters mentioned. This area does flood and I'm sure will be evacuated. Trying to give someone a head start that is all.

Pinellas County EOC Partially Activates

Noon-June 12--DAC voted to request that the BCC declare a state of emergency to prepare for what is expected to become Hurricane Alberto. No evacs expected - precautionary to save time if storm turns.

The Pinellas County Emergency Operations Center began operations in preparation for Tropical Storm Alberto, predicted to be Hurricane Alberto.

Officials expect some coastal flooding in low-lying areas, especially around the north end of Tampa Bay, areas in northeast St. Petersburg and along the beaches from Madeira Beach northward. Pinellas predicts the most critical period for this storm to be between 3 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday when tides and winds will reach their peaks.

The Pinellas County Citizen Information (CIC) line opened at 9 am today to answer questions from the public and assist them with their needs.

Residents are encouraged to call (727) 464-4333 for Pinellas County information throughout this storm threat

Red Cross is working to place three shelters on standby in north, mid and south Pinellas County, but officials do not expect to issue any evacuation orders. Protective actions will be discussed in further detail by the Pinellas County Disaster Advisory Committee (DAC) during a meeting at 11am in the Largo Training Center at 203 N. Highland Avenue in the Largo Fire Safety Complex. Several cities will be making sand bags available to residents:

Tarpon Springs - Bags are available at Public Works on Pine St. Sand is available at Live Oak Parking Lot at Pinellas Ave. and Safford, Dorsett Park at 500 E. Harrison St.,

Yep "Cone of Doom" is my comment.... sry, paul and ron said it (radio talk show morning guys) a while back and thats what me and my fiancee always refer to it as.

I've advised her to watch media carefully, the resort seems to be prepared for it, she knows to fill the tub and what not. She does have other family in Kenneth, Hopefully she's decided to go see my brother there for another day.

Radar loop out of Tampa has Alberto jogging north for the time being. I'm in a mobile home out near the gulf in Largo north of St Pete and I'm currently not concerned. The officials need to be ready in case of surprise track change but I don't think anyone expects hurricane conditions near Tampa if Alberto stays close to the NHC guidance which has been very good the last 24 hours.

I live in Gulfport which is very close to Treasure Island. Right now Alberto appears to be more of a rain event for us. Other than some flooded roads I don't anticipate much of a problem for this area. I doubt if there will even be any evacuations for this area. Best advise is to monitor the local media since that's where any offical announcement will be broadcast.
