Evacuations/sandbags, etc. West Central Florida (gulf).....

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Sun Jun 11, 2006 4:03 pm

Evacuations underway for folks west of U.S. 19 in Citrus County and vehicles are lined up for sandbags at the EOC staging area. Just passed about 10 school buses, probably headed for a staging area, too. Rain moderate and very steady, but very little wind yet here.

Tornadoes are popping inland Manatee County, DeSoto and Hardee Counties all over the place. Darn WX Radio Alarm is going nuts.

A pretty impressive feeder band is getting ready to move ashore the coastal areas of Pinellas County - should be the first real winds Pinellas sees from Alberto. Should come ashore within the next 1 hour or so.

I am interested on seeing the wind reports along the beaches of Pinellas County from this feederband. I am guessing gusts from 40-50mph.

I would venture to say about 25% of the people actually prepared for Alberto in Florida....but it would just be my guess.

playing during charley??? Where I was in Orlando you would have probably been blown down if you tried to walk outside. I remember when I had to go out for a quick second I was almost hit in the head by a flying "for sale" sign. I do not know how they must of managed to play outside! Frances and Jeanne were a little different though. During the worst parts we got, I would not have gone outside, but during the lulls when gusts were only 50-60mph it was kind of fun to walk outside and watch the storm first hand. I even remember trying to throw a football during Frances and having it go about a good 100 yards aided by a 50mph gust.

They were like the type of kids you wouldn't of wanted to hang out with, and I'm still suprised they lived through it too.

There would have been no playing outside in Charley where I was at. Actually, about an hour before the worst got here, my husband was outside attempting to videotape the approaching storm and was getting blown all around. Then, our locked doors started flying open. Now, once the storm passed, at about midnight we were all outside checking out the damage.

Excerpt AP:

Evacuation orders were posted for people in mobile homes or low-lying areas in at least five coastal counties stretching more than 100 miles. Those ordered evacuated included about 21,000 residents of Citrus, Levy and Taylor counties.

Alberto was expected to blow ashore anywhere from north of Tampa to the Panhandle. Forecasters said it could bring 4 to 10 inches of rain to central Florida and southeastern Georgia. Rain already was falling Monday and at least two tornados had formed, though there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.
