First gusts, already a tree down

#2 Postby Chrissy823 » Sun Jun 11, 2006 1:50 pm

Up here in Lake County, we just started getting our first gusts, I heard a LOUD *crack*, and my neighbor's huge oak tree has split and most of it is on the ground.

Not a good sign, LOL

I wonder, has this recent drought weakened the trees?

We had some pretty nice winds here on Anna Maria Island a while ago. The surf has really come up since even this morning and appears to be growing higher yet. The Turtle Watch people are out moving some nests farther up the beach. Keeping my eye out for a waterspout.

Not much yet, but hopefully it will add up over the next few days to douse the wildfires.

Through 400 PM...scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop across east central Florida and the adjacent coastal waters and move north at 20 mph. Due to the rapid movement...most areas will receive between a tenth and a quarter inch of rain from these storms...with local spots receiving over a half inch of rain. The heaviest rain is expected to occur along and west of the Florida Turnpike. Winds gusts near 30 mph may accompany the showers as well.

Some decent winds occured here in a thunderstorm not too long ago. Lots of palm fronds and such on the streets.

ABout 2 hours ago we had a band come through. Couple branches and some pine cones came flying at the back of my house made some noise and scared me. But have not had anything since than. Just a little rain and wind with that band and nothing since.

Weather Woman...

It got kind of hairy around here for Frances and Jeanne, I was without power for a week or so, but no real major damage.

There is 2% tornado risk issued for western Florida. Should you be expecting weak tornadoes?

Wow...talk about uncertainty...Watching the different news stations here in Tampa at 6 and 6:30, they all had COMPLETELY different tracks for Alberto. ABC 11 (with Titan technology) took it into the North Gulf near Pensacola, NBC 8 (with Viper technology) strengthened it considerably and brought it in around Pasco/Pinellas roughly, and CBS 10 (with Vortex technology) slowed it down a lot and had it sit in the Gulf for a while(past Tues afternoon atleast) while weakening. It will be interesting to see which model run best suits Alberto's track. Perhaps that will lead to what station many Tampa Bay residents will be watching throughout this hurricane season.

Reminds me of what the locals used to tell me when I moved to Florida over a decade ago: If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it'll change.

You can bet the drought has had some effect on the trees. Your home too. I know this is off topic but water around the foundation of your house if you can.

This might be a silly question, but what does this do?

Keeps it from settling unevenly. Dry ground compacts under weight differently than moister soil.

yeah, Lake county was spared the brunt of the 2004 storms. You got some TS force winds from Frances and Jeanne, but Charley pretty much missed you guys.

My house in NOLA when we bought it had settled only 1/4" from front to back in the 50+ years it had been there. After a major drought a couple of years ago, that amount nearly doubled in one summer. My house was on 4' brick pilings, though...I'm not sure how it affects slab construction.

It's probably just an urban myth I have anecdotal evidence for. Before I got married and had kids, I was a pretty smart guy. Now I'm the biggest fool on the planet, according to them.

Sheez - We get a quarter inch of rain and one big gust here in my subdivision in Vero Beach and the flippin' POWER goes off for three hours!

I'm gonna tune-up the genny, get a couple tanks of propane fill the freezer with ice. It's going to be a long season!
