10 Page Limit Increased to 25.

#1 Postby chadtm80 » Fri Jun 09, 2006 2:34 pm

For now the 10 page limit will be moved to 25. This however can change back at any time. We don't like having the limits either.. Trust us. But we would much rather deal with the "inconvenience" of the limit rule, then raise the load on the server to a point where people can't get on and get the information we are all here to receive and give. Limit could go up, limit could go back down. Who knows. We all just have to play it by ear and see what works best and where the happy median may be.

On a Similar subject lets talk about the posts in the long threads were the limit rule applies. If we kept out all the "we're at page 5 now, page 6 now, 199 post just posted lock it, type of things we wouldn't have to lock them as often. We all know what page the thread is on, we all know when it will be locked, so we just don't need to discuss it in the threads. Takes away from the main content in the thread. The 25 page is not a set in stone limit. There is no certain post count that automatically causes the thread to be locked. When a mod locks it at or around the limit it is on to the next one.

And a message to all members and staff :darrow:

Stay cool calm and collected.. Its only June 9th. Got a Long crazy road ahead of us.

25 pages is from experiance a good limit, its not stupidly long but its long enough to keep most people happy and it'll take a few hours even at frantic pace to close the thread.

Let me guess - you needed to be able to take a coffee break between locking threads? Thanks for all the work and I like the change.

:cheesy: Thank you. I feel 25 pages shouldn't be Too much of a load for servers to handle. At least not until hopefully aug or so if there's majors out there headed towards us coast lines.

We'll keep our fingers crossed. Even when we had the 10 page limit during the height of the season last year we had problems with the server bogging down. The great thing is that pretty much everyone was very understanding when we had to enforce these limits, etc. because of the load on the server.

Thanks!

On a side note, I think that the 25-page rule should only be in effect for the Comments/discussion thread. All other threads, IMO, should still be kept at 10.

I would keep it simple and make all topics have the 25 page rule instead of 10. To many people would be confused and the Admin said it generally which I guess means for all topics.

How many times has Storm2K upgraded their servers? If the servers get this bad during an Invest then maybe the owner should look into a upgrade (I doubt that's possible right now).

I don't think it's really the server's fault, rather than the phpbb software. According to what I read, everytime someone accesses any page on a multi-page thread, the phpbb software calls up EVERY SINGLE POST in that topic regardless of what page you asked for, but only DISPLAYS what is contained within the page you asked for.

In other words, the server is having to load every single post for every single page everytime someone accesses it.
